ABOUT SWAMI SHANKARANANDA GIRI OF BALTIMORE (1935–2014)
Author of numerous writings on yoga philosophy and meditation, he established the Divine Life Church of Absolute Oneness in Baltimore, now Awake Yoga Meditation. He founded the Universal Swami Order, expanding the ancient Swami Order to include men and women, married and unmarried. In addition to meditation talks, he offered spiritual hypnotherapy and spiritual counseling to help meditators realize their own pure light and kindness. A Kriya master, he gave Kriya initiation and instruction privately, one on one. His guru was Swami Premananda, whose guru was Swami Yogananda Paramahansa, who brought Kriya to the United States.
Appointed by Swami Shankarananda as his successor, Swami Nityananda lives the spiritual lineage and teachings of universality and oneness at Awake Yoga Meditation, following joyfully in the path blazed by Swami Shankarananda.
