Dr. Sherzai was born in Kabul, Afghanistan in 1940. At the young age of 25, she was one of the first ten female students to complete her studies at the medical school at Kabul University, which opened access to women in 1957. As a pioneering physician, she worked for over 20 years as a gynecologist and public health advocate in Herat and Kabul. She is a descendant of both Amir Sher Ali Khan and Amir Abdur Rahman Khan of the Mohammadzai tribe. After the Soviet invasion, she and her family had to leave their beloved nation or risk being imprisoned and killed by the Communists for being part of the royal family.
