Doris Plantus is the middle daughter of an immigrant carpenter and deacon from Bucovina, and first generation Romanian American mother from Banat, Romania. She has lived in two languages and cultures her whole life, to which she attributes her deep relationship with the creative human condition. Sihastrul is her first novella, written in Romanian and self-translated in English in the style of great magical realists such as Borges, Marquez, and Sadoveanu. She draws on a robust legacy of folklore, history, religion, and philosophy in her relentless exploration of language as the most intimate aspect of human consciousness. Like Sihastrul (The Hermit), the eponymous hero of her first bilingual novella, Plantus seeks meaning in all things, and combines her interdisciplinary reflexes in her contemplation of the Word as the ultimate time-traveler. In addition to her literary projects, she is a musician, Romanian choreographer, creative artist, carpenter, backyard mechanic, and English professor. Plantus lives in Troy, Michigan, with her family, faithful cocker spaniel, and two goats. Sihastrul (The Hermit) is the first in a series that imagines its hero as the author of an obscure manuscript that begins in Genesis and ends in an earthly cave. A new kind of literary fiction that blends folklore, fact, legend, and creative non-fiction, Plantus’s bold creation is a highly stylized tale of involuntary time travel and the search for the first word. When an old angel falls from heaven, he is spared from death by entering the body and soul of the infant Hermit as he draws his first breath. The result of this strange cohabitation of mortal and divine sets a new cycle into being—or is it an old one?
