About this listen

Growing up on Rendol 4, Aiden Hill only ever wanted to help better his planet. Now a lieutenant in the Alliance Military, he is doing just that, defending the population from space pirates, slave traders and a rogue species fighting them for colonisation rights of the planet.

But during a mission gone awry, Aiden stumbles upon Kade, a brainwashed slave who immediately imprints on him and declares Aiden to be his master. But slavery in the Alliance is strictly forbidden, leaving Aiden attempting to rehabilitate his unexpected charge, despite Kade’s obvious reluctance to cooperate.

Kade has waited for years to meet his master, the man he can devote himself to for the rest of his life. But when they finally meet, his master seems oddly reluctant to make use of Kade’s many skills – including his skills in the bedroom! Instead of giving him orders, his master insists that Kade should make his own decisions and express opinions that conflict with his master’s desires.

A slave without a master is like a boat without a sail; directionless and destined to be swept up by the storms of life. But for Aiden to treat Kade as the slave he insists he is would be a moral travesty, defying both Alliance law and his own conscience. So how can the two of them ever find a middle ground, when the life Kade so ardently wants is one that Aiden finds so abhorrent?

Caution: Contains frequent military-style violence.

I love it when authors use aliens to shine a light on what it means to be a human. The idea that all humans in space would view slavery with abhorrence is, perhaps, a tiny bit naive, but hey, it's fiction. And it does not detract from the idea that the human MC is a highly ethical man. I thought at one point that the author had painted herself into a corner regarding the ethics of free will, but she solved it. I enjoyed the people, the world and the story.

The narration was also spot on, with Kade's rolled R's a very nice touch which impressively did not veer into Scottish.

I think the names Kade and Aiden are too similar sounding, but that is really my only complaint.

'Kade' was a powerful and eye-opening listen that left me with a swirl of emotions and a deep curiosity for more. It dives into a morally complex world where alien species, biological instincts, and societal roles clash in intense and often uncomfortable ways and that’s what makes it so gripping.

The story is filled with controversy, emotional tension, and ethical questions, especially surrounding the concept of bonding across species. The dynamic between Kade and Aiden raises thought-provoking ideas about autonomy, trust, and what it really means to form a connection when instinct and choice collide. It doesn’t shy away from the hard questions, and that’s exactly what pulls you in.

What stood out to me most was how well thought out the alien species were. They weren’t just “exotic window dressing” they had clear, distinct behaviors, rules, and cultural weight that made the world feel alive and complex. There were moments that made me uncomfortable, but in a way that challenged my perspective and kept me hooked from beginning to end.

The Highlights:

Broad emotional range, from tension and fear to intimacy and trust.

Thoughtful alien design that made each interaction layered and exciting.

A world full of moral gray areas that left me asking, "What would I do?"

Narration by Gabriel Danes was once again outstanding, he captured both Kade’s alien detachment and Aiden’s emotional conflict perfectly, grounding the story in raw, believable emotion.

What I’d Like to See More Of:

More about Kade’s life before he was brought in, what was his world like, and how did it shape him?

Deeper look into Aiden’s past, especially before becoming a soldier. It would have added even more emotional weight to his growth and decisions.

Further exploration of other alien species and their cultures. What we got was fascinating, but I’m eager to see even more.

My Final Thoughts:

Kade was a bold, intense, and emotionally complex story that didn’t hold back. It asked the right questions, even if it didn’t give all the answers and that’s what made it so compelling. I’m absolutely looking forward to more books in this world. If there are spin-offs or deeper dives into other characters and species, I’ll be there day one to listen.
