The process by which nations escape poverty and achieve economic and social progress has been the subject of extensive examination for hundreds of years. The notion of development itself has evolved from an original preoccupation with incomes and economic growth to a much broader understanding of development. In this Very Short Introduction, Ian Goldin considers the contributions that education, health, gender, equity, and other dimensions of human well-being make to development.

Economist Amartya Sen's 1997 work Development as Freedom presents a "middle way" approach to how we should look at international development, based on the idea that its success or failure cannot be measured by income alone. Having grown up in India, Sen brings his own understanding of what poverty really means to the issue, arguing that above all, the process and goal of development must be human freedom. He backs up this idea through his concept of "capabilities."

Since the 19th century, people have claimed that the prosperity enjoyed by the First World was the result of its devotion to unconstrained economic freedoms. In his 2003 book Kicking Away the Ladder, South Korean economist Ha-Joon Chang claims this was not the case and that, in fact, First World economic success was due to exactly the kinds of state intervention that traditional economic thinking consistently opposes today.

Do you crave intimacy but feel overwhelmed when someone gets too close? Are you torn between wanting love and protecting your independence? Do you withdraw when emotions rise, leaving you feeling misunderstood or emotionally drained? Or are you in a relationship with someone who struggles to open up, commit, or show affection? If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone—and the good news is, it doesn’t have to be this way. Avoidant attachment is more common than you think, and while it may feel like an unchangeable part of who you are, it doesn’t have to be your destiny.

This audiobook is about developing mastery. Although I respect the fact that starting at an early age does give a person a jump start, achieving mastery - or at least a substantially enhanced level of performance - can happen at any age. As a clinical hypnotherapist and NLP trainer, obviously my emphasis will be on the use of suggestion and imagination as tools to accelerate the achievement of mastery. The more you focus on a skill, the thicker and more developed the neural substrate related to the skill will become.
