They are forced to place their lives in danger repeatedly as they encounter survivors who have either turned to each other for help or resorted to evil at the expense of others.

Chief Barnes is the leader of a band of survivors, and he is convinced that the United States military must have made a stand against the infected dead somewhere. He and his trusted friends embark on an expedition across the continent to Alaska, searching for more survivors from the infection that reduced the population to near extinction. Their travels take them to the Aleutian Islands, where they discover more than they expected. The world has had years to change. The infected dead roam the streets and the forests in search of living victims.

Ed and Jean Jackson survived the early days of the apocalypse with the help of their close friends, Chief Barnes and Kathy McGinley. Over the years since the infection began, they chose to step back from the battle against the infected dead and remain within the safety of the shelter hidden in Green Cavern. Now, they have embarked on a perilous mission of their own to attempt the rescue of a group of survivors who are clinging to life near Niagara Falls and the Finger Lakes of New York.
