Edith Nesbit (Edith Bland,1858-1924) was an English author and poet. She authored or collaborated on more than 60 books of fiction for children, many of which have been adapted for film and television. She wrote tales of fantasy, magic, and misadventure in which children in normal circumstances are faced with extraordinary characters or events.

The Book of Dragons consists of eight fantastical stories of dragons and people who get to meet and interact with them. The dragons are of all kinds, colors, temperaments, and ages. The stories are full of adventures and action. The book was published originally in The Strand Magazine in 1899 as a seven-part series, with an additional story added after the author’s death.

Edith Nesbit wrote under the name E. Nesbit, and is most famous for her stories for children, and has influenced the likes of J.K. Rowling, C.S. Lewis and P.L. Travers. She wrote over 60 books, including The Railway Children, Five Children and It, and The Story of the Treasure Seekers. Her second, darker reputation was as a purveyor of horror stories, which are sublime in their elegance and simplicity.
