In 1845, after years of literary and emotional struggle, friend and colleague Ralph Waldo Emerson invited Thoreau to build a cabin on his land near Walden Pond, the location of which became Thoreau's inspiration. Walden records the doctrines of transcendentalism that he lived, supported, and for which he became famous. He focuses on the concept of self-knowledge and encourages all people to find some way to learn more about themselves and the world around them. Thoreau is remembered as a major American essayist, poet, and practical philosopher.

The novel begins with humans watching the skies closely, fascinated with the worlds beyond Earth’s atmosphere. As astronomers and scientists hone in on some strange occurrences on Mars, their observations soon become frightening - humans are not the only intelligent beings, and those other beings are also curious about humans. Alien spacecraft starts crashing into England and as Martians emerge from the ships, they begin terrorizing the Earth and bringing destruction with every step.

Jack London is primarily known for his novels and short stories that center around the natural world. The Road is a more personal story and takes listeners through London’s experiences in poverty in the late 1800s, which was the time of the largest economic depression in the US to that day. London writes about his experiences begging, sneaking onto trains, taking on many odd jobs, and evading the police who are out to arrest any vagrants.
