The charm of travelling by a train as it speeds its way out of a tunnel or a jungle and passes through nondescript villages and towns is unmatched. There also exists a joyful curiosity in unfolding the mysterious lives and destinations of its passengers. Ruskin Bond has been writing tales about the hinterland for decades, but this is the first time his stories revolving around trains and railway stations of small-town India have been brought together in a single collection.

They say this train runs on stolen souls. They say if you fall asleep, you might wake up somewhere else…or worse, as someone else. Step aboard with modern horror master Michael Squid, conductor of nightmares, as he guides you through these and other destinations of pure terror.

An enchanting collection of stories from the heartland of India Ruskin Bond’s simple characters, living amidst the lush forests of the Himalayan foothills, are remarkable for their quiet heroism, courage and grace, and age-old values of honesty and fidelity. Residents of nondescript villages...

Have you ever been too proud to take someone back who you loved, but who wronged you. I have. This is the story of someone who reminded me of that, because of their own story. It's a train wreck of a truck driver story... Like the break up of all good love gone bad is. It made me want to go "Back to Slidell..." To that moment in time... When it would have been better to forget pride... And forgive.

A train seems a very reliable mode to bring out the best in authors and sometimes the worst in their fictional characters. In this volume our narratives are usually set inside the carriage compartment where they are really up close and personal with each other. All our authors need to do is to light the touchpaper and stand well back.

A single mother rents a fundamentalist preacher's carriage house. A pop star contemplates suicide in the hotel where Janis Joplin died. A philandering ex-pat doctor gets hooked on morphine while reeling from his wife's death. And in the title story, a train engineer, after running over a young girl on his tracks, grapples with the pervasive question: what propels a life toward such a disastrous end?

These fifteen genre-bending stories are set against a backdrop of sudden violence and profound regret, populated by characters whose circumstances and longings drive them to the point of no return... and sometimes even further. Traversing the back roads of the south and beyond, these stories probe the boundaries of imagination, taking the listener to the fringes of a society where the world looks different, and once you visit, you won't ever be the same.

Conversations happen everywhere. A few words to pass the time or a detailed examination of views. But on trains they seem to be different. Speaking whilst in motion gives the whole discussion a momentum that often takes us into uncharted territory.

Sabine Baring-Gould (1834-1924) was a British writer, clergyman and member of the landed gentry, having inherited an estate of 3,000 acres. His strangest and most enduring works are those which are based on fantastical medieval myths and folklore. 'The 9.30 Up Train' is a peculiar ghost story about a strange ghost which haunts both the road near the railway station and also a particular carriage of the train itself.

Narrator Glenn Hascall magnificently captures the characters of this O. Henry short story about holding up a train.

With "Buckshot Cheney's Last Train Ride" and "A Mysterious Visit", a Magical Reality Chatauqua Show celebrates the comic genius of Americana's premier folk humorist. Mark Twain has been making us laugh for generations and, with "Buckshot Cheney's Last Train Ride" and the preposterous income tax insights of "A Mysterious Visit," American Listener's Theatre presents us with the greatest known antidote to the waves of fear that grip the nation: some belly shaking laughter at the expense of our tormentors.
