Dickens invites listeners on a vivid journey through 19th-century Italy, offering a series of lively and insightful snapshots of the country’s landscapes, cities, and people. Written during his travels, this travelogue captures not just the beauty and history of Italy, but also its complexities, contradictions, and the vibrant life that pulses through its streets.

In 1892, Gertrude Bell visited Persia (now Iran) shortly after the appointment of her uncle, Sir Frank Lascelles, as British minister in Tehran. Three years later came Persian Pictures, Gertrude Bell’s first written work, which presents a series of vivid sketches of Persian culture and society at the time. Bell explores various cities and landscapes, and encounters local characters along the way, providing a unique perspective on Persian life and customs.

In 1843 the material that Dickins had gathered on his trip to America was published with the title American Notes [also produced by Assembled Stories]. The book was viewed with disdain from both sides of the Atlantic and in some quarters, strong disapproval, his criticism having done little for Anglo-American relations.
