Doch dann finden sie in einem Vinschgauer Bunker etwas deutlich weniger Erfreuliches: die mumifizierte Leiche einer jungen Frau.

Der Eisack ist ein wildromantischer Gebirgsfluss, der schon mal entwurzelte Bäume mit sich führt. Und eines schönen Sommertages auch die Leiche von Franz Mitterlechner, einem in Südtirol weithin bekannten Weinhändler. Baron Emilio von Ritzfeld-Hechenstein, Privatermittler wider Willen, ist das erst einmal herzlich egal. Bis er erfährt, dass der Tote ihn testamentarisch bedacht hat: mit einer Magnumflasche Tignanello, einem besonders edlen Roten. Doch wenn der Baron von etwas Ahnung hat, dann ist es Wein.

Selbst der bekennende Misanthrop Baron Emilio von Ritzfeld-Hechenstein muss zugeben: In Südtirol lässt es sich aushalten! Der Wein ist köstlich, und die lokalen Spezialitäten schmecken vorzüglich. Da ist es nur folgerichtig, dass Emilio in Südtirol dauerhaft Wurzeln geschlagen hat. Seine Tätigkeit als Privatdetektiv will er vorübergehend ruhen lassen. Bis ein Winzer seine Hilfe braucht. Ein anonymer Erpresser behauptet, einige Flaschen des vorzüglichen Lagrein im Weinkeller vergiftet zu haben. Da kann Emilio nicht untätig bleiben: Bei Wein versteht der Baron keinen Spaß!

Baron Emilio von Ritzfeld-Hechenstein versteht etwas vom Rebensaft, schließlich wuchs er auf einem Weingut auf. Doch seit dem Bankrott des Vaters ist Emilio chronisch pleite – was er nicht zuletzt seiner Vorliebe für die schönen Dinge des Lebens verdankt: guter Wein und gutes Essen! Zum Glück hat Emilio nicht nur einen feinen Gaumen, sondern auch eine ausgezeichnete Beobachtungsgabe: Sein Geld verdient er als Privatdetektiv. Als ihn eine alte Dame bittet, den vermeintlichen Unfalltod ihres Sohnes aufzuklären, überlegt Emilio nicht lange.
