About this listen

Random House presents the audiobook edition of Workhouse Nightingale by Holly Green.

Can this orphan ever fulfil her nursing dreams...?

After her mother's death, Dora is sent to live with her father and his other family. But Dora is mixed race and illegitimate, two facts that see her treated as little more than a servant by her step-mother and half siblings. This doesn't stop the son of the house abusing his position and Dora finds herself on the streets and pregnant...

Sent to the local workhouse, Dora's future looks bleak but she still dreams of a better life where she can help others as her late mother did with her herbal remedies. But can a girl from a workhouse ever achieve anything, let alone become one of Florence Nightingale's nurses?

The way Dora just abandoned her baby with the family that treated her badly annoyed me. she seemed like a very selfish women. I felt at times that the story focused to much on talking about herbs and their uses rather than on her nursing or relationships. it was ok, but inconsistent. plus she showed no real concern for her son. if it wasn't for the man she wanted to marry suggesting adopting him I think she would have carried on with her life. I didn't like her at all or the callous way way dumped her newborn son- he could have starved to death. she could have traced him at any point... she didn't.

wasn't a likeable character

I read the other two books in the workhouse series and thoroughly enjoyed reading them. But this story was boring and I think listening to it on audio made it worse as I couldnt stand listening to the story teller's voice and her portrayal of Dora's and the other character's voices. Especially her portrayal of the cockney voices they were dull and pretty awful, completely dulled the story. This book went down hill the moment Dora left the Infirmary. I'm only halfway through and struggling to listen to anymore of it.

I was bored
