Meet the contributors
Sandi Toksvig
Sandi Toksvig OBE, is a well-known broadcaster whose career has included celebrated series such as Call My Bluff and Whose Line Is It Anyway?. Sandi has hosted Antiques Master, 1001 Things You Should Know, 15 to 1 and in 2016 took over as host of the hugely popular QI. In 2017 she and Noel Fielding became the new co-hosts of The Great British Bake Off, until after three delightful series Sandi stepped down to focus on other projects, including The Write Offs and Extraordinary Escapes for Channel 4.
For a decade Sandi was a familiar voice to BBC Radio 4 listeners as the chair of The News Quiz which led to her induction into the Radio Hall of Fame. Sandi is the president of the Writers’ Guild of Great Britain and has authored more than twenty fiction and non-fiction books, and has written extensively for theatre.
Co-founder of the Women’s Equality Party, Sandi is an activist for gender equality.
Sheila Hancock
Sheila’s extensive career has ranged from the original West End casts of Sweeney Todd, Annie and Sister Act to being the first woman artistic director of the RSC’s tour; from playing Ranyevskaya in The Cherry Orchard at the Royal National Theatre to Celebrity Gogglebox; and from Senna Pod in Carry on Cleo to winning an Olivier Award for her performance as Fraulein Schneider in Cabaret.
Her most recent work on screen includes the title role in the feature film Edie as well as ITV’s latest season of Unforgotten, and co-presenting Ch4’s Great Canal Journeys with Gyles Brandreth. For Sky recently she played Goody Alsop in A Discovery of Witches; Mimi Vincent in three series of Delicious; and Gala Dali in The Dali and the Cooper (Urban Myths series). She was awarded Author of the Year for her autobiography The Two of Us which she followed with Just Me; and then, aged 81, with her debut novel Miss Carter's War. She is currently working on her fifth book.
London Hughes
London Hughes is a stand-up comedian, writer, actor and host who was the first British Black woman to be nominated for the Dave Edinburgh Comedy ‘Best Show’ Award for her 2019 show, To Catch a D*ck, which was recorded as her debut comedy special. Executive produced by Kevin Hart, To Catch a D*ck, recounts London’s adventures in dating on Netflix. London also co-hosts The Netflix Afterparty, a first-of-its-kind weekly comedy after-show.
London was awarded the Royal Television Society Award 2020 for 'Best Entertainment Performance' for Don’t Hate The Playaz, and in 2009 received the prestigious 'Funny Women Award' at the London Comedy Store.
London has appeared in award-winning series Fleabag, as well as The Stand-Up Sketch Show. London also created, wrote and starred in her own YouTube comedy series, No Filter, which featured some of the UK’s brightest new talent. In addition, she has hosted Extreme Hair Wars and appeared on satirical panel show Mock the Week. She hosts a dating podcast London, Actually.
Estelle
A Grammy award-winning international artist, Estelle has released five solo albums alongside countless features and collaborations. After her acclaimed 2004 debut The 18th Day, Estelle soared to international prominence with 2008’s Shine. The lead single, American Boy
featuring Kanye West, won a 2009 GRAMMY® in the category of 'Best Rap Sung Collaboration'. She released the follow-up All Of Me in 2012, and the single Thank You
received a GRAMMY® nomination for 'Best R&B Performance'.
The Estelle Show on Apple Music is a daily opportunity to invite listeners into Estelle’s home and heart to celebrate the diverse sounds and cultures that music provides. Estelle’s vocal talents have now ventured into animation voicing a lead character in Cartoon Network’s Emmy-nominated hit show Steven Universe.
Estelle also runs her foundation All of Me, which focuses on educating and expanding the horizons of young people through college scholarships and volunteer opportunities abroad.
Shappi Khorsandi
Shappi established herself as one of the country’s finest comedians in 2006 with her sell out Edinburgh show, Asylum Speaker. This show lead to the publication of her childhood memoirs, A Beginner’s Guide To Acting English, her best selling literary debut.
Shappi’s career has taken her to all corners of the globe, she has appeared on countless TV and radio shows including; Mock The Week, 8 Out Of 10 Cats, Have I Got News For You, QI, Live At The Apollo and Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow, Just a Minute as well as other flagship BBC Radio 4 programmes.
She is proud of being a 'spit & sawdust' standup and one of her favourite things is pulling on her wellies, trudging through muddy fields, and performing at every music festival which has a comedy tent – from Glastonbury to Secret Garden Party.
Her screenwriting debut was in the form of Sky’s Little Crackers.
Jen Brister
Jen Brister is a critically acclaimed stand-up comedian and writer who has been seen on BBC’s Live at the Apollo, Frankie Boyle’s New World Order and on Hypothetical and Sara Pascoe’s comedy Lectures on Dave.
She is a regular performer on the UK and international comedy circuit and has written and performed on BBC Radio 4’s The News Quiz, The Now Show and presented for BBC 6 Music.
Her latest show Meaningless can be streamed on Amazon Prime, NextUp or Soho Comedy. Jen supported Romesh Ranganathan on tour at the end of 2019 before embarking on her own tour in 2020/2021 with her hit show, Under Privilege.’
Deborah Frances-White
Deborah Frances-White is a comedian best known for her hit podcast The Guilty Feminist, which has recorded live from sold out shows at The London Palladium, The Sydney Opera House, The Barbican and The Royal Albert Hall, and has toured Australia, New Zealand and North America. She is also the creator and producer of BBC Radio 4’s GrownUpLand and is the host and creator of Global Pillage.
Deborah’s television credits include Have I Got News for You, Mock the Week, Film 2018 and Rob Rinder’s Good Year Bad Year. Her BBC Radio 4 show Deborah Frances-White Rolls the Dice won The Writers’ Guild Award for Best Radio Comedy in 2016.
Deborah’s book The Guilty Feminist is a Sunday Times Best Seller and her first feature film Say My Name won multiple film festival awards and was nominated for Best Screenplay at The London International Filmmaker Festival 2019.
Susan Wokoma
BAFTA Breakthrough Brit Susan Wokoma has already established a diverse and award-winning body of work in her short career and she continues to establish herself as ‘one to watch’ with each role she takes on across film, television and on stage.
Susan’s performances include parts in Truth Seekers, Enola Holmes, Dark Mon£y and Chewing Gum to name just a few, as well as films such as Half of a Yellow Sun and The Inbetweeners 2. Susan also wrote and starred in the award winning SKY Comedy short Love the Sinner directed by Jennifer Sheridan.
Susan’s theatre work includes productions at the Royal Court, Bush Theatre, Almeida, and The Royal National Theatre.
Susan Calman
Susan Calman used to be a corporate lawyer, however her life in comedy started in 2006 when she reached the semi-finals of both the BBC New Comedy Awards and So You Think You’re Funny and was a finalist in the prestigious ‘Funny Women’ competition.
On Radio 4 Susan has appeared on The News Quiz, The Unbelievable Truth, Now Show, Dilemma, So Wrong it’s Right and presented Woman’s Hour. She’s recorded her own sitcom for Radio 4 as well as five solo series including Susan Calman Makes Me Happy and also hosts the hugely successful podcast Mrs Brightside. Susan is a familiar face on our TVs, appearing on QI, HIGNFY and Mock the Week as well as hosting shows like The Boss, Secret Scotland, CBBC’s Top Class and Armchair Detectives (winning her a second Scottish BAFTA).
Susan has written two books Cheer Up Love and Sunny Side Up.
Bethany Black
Bethany Black is a comedian, writer and actor from Lancashire. She was the first trans actor in a leading role on British television when she played Helen Brears in Channel 4 and Russell T Davies’ Banana. She was also the first out trans actor in Doctor Who.
In 2020, Beth was the recipient of the Joe.co.uk Comedy Award.
Sara Pascoe
Sara is one of the most revered comedians in the UK and has enjoyed multiple sell-out UK tours and a sell-out run in London's West End. Sara is the writer, star and executive producer of the series Out of Her Mind based on her BBC short, Sara Pascoe vs Monogamy which was broadcast to great acclaim. Sara has hosted Live at the Apollo, Comedians Giving Lectures, Guessable and recorded her own stand-up special, Sara Pascoe Live: LadsLadsLads. Her further extensive TV credits include regular guest appearances on Frankie Boyles New World Order, QI, Have I Got News for You?, 8 out of 10 Cats and Would I Lie to You?. She has fronted Travelling Blind and presented the travel series Last Woman on Earth.
Sara has authored the critically acclaimed Animal and the Sunday Times Best Seller Sex Power Money, whose companion podcast has had over a million downloads.
Lolly Adefope
Lolly Adefope is an award-winning character comedian and one of the most exciting comedy actors to emerge from the UK in recent years. Her solo, multi-character live shows have garnered five-star reviews and led to sellout runs at both the Edinburgh Festival and London’s West End.
Lolly’s extensive broadcast credits include Shrill, Miracle Workers, Ghosts, This Time With Alan Partridge, Loaded, Damned and Taskmaster.
Lolly starred in her own self-written short, Sorry, and wrote and starred in Lolly Adefope’s Christmas - which was nominated for a Broadcast Digital Award. Lolly co-stars in the feature films: The Spy Who Dumped Me and Mission: Impossible – Fallout.
Lolly has written for The Guardian, WePresent and Feminists Don't Wear Pink. She was included in The ELLE List’s 2019 50 Game-Changers of Now; and The Evening Standard’s 2019 and 2018 Progress 1000.
