Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

From the best-selling author of The Story of the British Isles in 100 Places comes this inspiring and beautifully written meditation on the wisdom inherited from our ancestors.

For all we have gained in the modern world, simple peace of mind is hard to find. In a time that is increasingly fraught with complexity and conflict, we are told that our well-being relies on remaining as present as possible. But what if the key to being present lies in the past?

In Wisdom of the Ancients, Neil Oliver takes us back in time to grab hold of the ideas buried in forgotten cultures and early civilisations. From Laetoli footprints in Tanzania to Keralan rituals, stone circles and cave paintings, Oliver takes us on a global journey through antiquity. A master storyteller, drawing on immense knowledge of our ancient past, he distils this wisdom into 12 messages that have endured the test of time and invites us to consider how these might apply to our lives today. The result is powerful and inspirational, moving and profound.

A fascinating glimpse into the past

Being a long time history buff this book certainly delivered in its premise of wisdom. Neil Oliver brings his interpretations of our ancient history and the ancestors into easily understood and inspiring lessons for today.
The narration is excellent, smooth and clear tone and a rich Scottish accent make this a soothing book to listen to.

Poignant, pristine rawness of human nature

What better way to journey through the pristine rawness of our human nature than to follow the path laid down by this immensely talented collector and teller of our species stories. Looking forward to many more readings.

Great, thought provoking book.

Perfectly narrated, thought provoking book. Deserves more than 5 stars. Neil Oliver presents interesting, salient facts and stories from our history which are so relevant to life today. A timely reminder that we (mankind) are rushing through our lives at such speed that we are forgetting what was known by the generations before us and its relevance to modern thinking.
I thoroughly recommend listening to Neil Oliver reading his own book as he really does it better than anyone else could.
I am now going to listen to anything else on audible which is written andy read by him.

Beautiful!

Narrated with serene beauty, if we just took in half the messages within this book, our modern world would be a much better place!

Interesting and soothing

Such a fountain of knowledge. Really makes you think of the world and times gone by, and that human emotions remain the same. Poetry to listen to.
Well worth it, good audio book for long lockdown walks !

If only they had used a professional reader

The author has such interesting ideas and a poetic turn of phrase but sadly he has opted to read this book himself. Setting aside his thick accent, his un-nuanced, unprofessional reading just doesn’t do this subtle material justice. One’s attention wanders as he provides a rather flat reading. What a shame.

A fascinating book

This is a book that I will read over and over again. In places it is harder to grasp the names and places and the ancient mythologies but Neil Oliver draws you from the ancient to the modern and shows us what we lack in understanding the nature of this amazing world which we are destroying.
