Summary

"With the original unabridged text of Supernatural, I offer the reader an investigation that explores the human experience with psychedelics from the Stone Age to the Space Age and the role of these extraordinary plant medicines as tools to investigate the nature of reality itself." (Graham Hancock)

Discover the pathway to the gods.

Less than 50,000 years ago mankind had no art, no religion, no sophisticated symbolism, no innovative thinking. Then, in a dramatic and electrifying change, described by scientists as "the greatest riddle in human history," all the skills and qualities that we value most highly in ourselves appeared already fully formed, as though bestowed on us by hidden powers.

In Visionary, Graham Hancock sets out to investigate this mysterious "before-and-after moment" and to discover the truth about the influences that gave birth to modern human mind. His quest takes him on a journey of adventure and detection from the stunningly beautiful painted caves of prehistoric France, Spain, and Italy to remote rock shelters in the mountains of South Africa, where he finds a treasure trove of extraordinary Stone Age art.

Hancock uncovers clues that lead him to travel to the depths of the Amazon rainforest to drink the powerful plant hallucinogen ayahuasca with Indian shamans, whose paintings contain images of "supernatural beings" identical to the animal-human hybrids depicted in prehistoric caves and rock shelters. Hallucinogens such as mescaline also produce visionary encounters with exactly the same beings. Scientists at the cutting edge of consciousness research have begun to consider the possibility that such hallucinations may be real perceptions of other "dimensions."

Could the "supernaturals" first depicted in the painted caves and rock shelters be the ancient teachers of mankind? Could it be that human evolution is not just the "blind," "meaningless" process that Darwin identified, but something more purposive and intelligent, something that we have barely even begun to understand?

Previously published as Supernatural, this definitive edition includes a new Introduction by Graham Hancock as well as restored chapters that were omitted from the original paperback release.

Critic reviews

“Previously published as Supernatural (2015), this new definitive edition of Visionary includes a new Introduction by Graham Hancock as well as restored chapters that were omitted from the original paperback release. …deftly narrated by Hancock and will have a very special appeal to students and non-specialist general readers who are interest in anthropology, prehistory, and human evolution.” —Midwest Book Review

Fantastic journey!

This book spans so many different and connected subjects - psychedelic experiences, cave art, alien abduction and fairy lore to mention just a few.
Fascinating subject matter and Graham's narration is brilliant.

Essential reading

Graham Hancock and his extensive research and reporting is as necessary as the pursuit of knowledge through rigid academic structures and perhaps even more so.
He presents a view of the subjects he covers free from institutional ego, shedding light into those spaces many dare not look. His results often reveal ignored or hidden knowledge that is essential for the betterment of our understanding of our origins and hence ourselves. .
I am so glad this work and other Graham Hancock works exist.
I am certain he is gently seeding a path upon which science and their tenuous academic feet will one day frequent.

Fascinating and thought provoking

Every thoughtful person is aware of a hidden spiritual dimension which is hard for humans to access or understand, but which certainly exists.
The author provides a convincing argument that the universal mind identified by Jung might well be explained by facets of the DNA of all living things, detailed scientific knowledge of which as yet remains limited, which contain a blueprint of spiritual knowledge of which we are still only dimly aware.
Not only a universal mind, but a universal imagination (or is it actually an awareness) made accessible in the dream/trance achieved in altered states of consciousness, in which similar images/creatures, sometimes terrifying but sometimes reassuring, have been widely reported in every culture throughout history.
The author throws light on these mysteries – as revealed in the trance state – by examining in detail the phenomenon of shamanism, the meaning of cave paintings by our prehistoric ancestors, and the accounts of people claiming to have been abducted by aliens, widely reported from the 1950s onwards.
This is not sensationalism but a thoughtful look at the beliefs of different cultures, the accounts of witnesses and the work of various scholars and researchers. Of particular note is the evidence provided by cultures in which shamanism formed or still forms an important part.
What is true and what is real? The arguments put forward by Graham Hancock are plausible, even though they may be unsettling for some.

A MUST read for anyone looking to understand the Origins of our Existence!!

I first came across Graham on the Joe rogan podcast and was amazed by his research into ancient Amazonian civilisations. This compelled me to purchase this book when it came up on my suggested page.

I must say I am very glad that I did. I also feel that it’s my duty to give a well thought out review to report on my experience.

The book is long and has kept me company through many long drives, slow days at work and even a 2x day tattoo session which was exceptionally helpful to get me through.

You will learn about the ancient cave art and why our ancestors drew them. You will learn about the tribes of the past and current in South America. You will learn about historical smear campaigns to tarnish archeology in its whole and also the archaeologists that researched at the time. Which I must note is still going on today (probably getting worse).

But my favourite is the explanation of psychedelics and their benefits for us. Even how they may be attributed to our very existence. This might appeal to me more as I have experienced them myself. I’ve been to the Amazon and I’ve been to the other dimensions here in the UK and I can honestly say hands down that what Graham says is correct and what I have seen myself when travelling in the other worlds that these plants open up to us.

I may be bias or I may be very right but I think that Graham is a brave person for going beyond the boundaries and trying these plant medicines for himself. Thank you Graham I will be looking out for any more of your research in the times ahead.

Many thanks
Samir the Great

Fascinating

Where to start? Thank you for this book! It bridges science, shamanism and the spiritual dimensions with psychotropics, accounts of ufo abductees and sacred texts. Hancock is great narrator and engaging writer. His backlog of well researched knowledge is confounding. And he's willing to experience what he's talking about. I was hooked from start to finish.

Fascinating

Enjoying listening so far. Good narration and Fascinating insights into the visions and symbols which have been passed down through the ages of human kind.
Only problem is the accompanying PDF which the author mentions a few times doesn't seem to be there when purchasing the audio book, maybe I'm missing something?

Fascinating

I want to get high with Graham Hancock! In all seriousness (who am I kidding, I was being serious), this is an absolutely fascinating book exploring the expansive levels of reality that we live as part of but which are often hidden from us in our human forms. Drawing on ancient history, spirituality, psychology and science, he weaves a well researched and intriguing set of theories about the fundamental nature of our consciousness and the multifaceted universe that we are a part of. I loved it
