Summary

Clever and ambitious, Special Agent Adam Darling (yeah, he's heard all the jokes before) was on the fast track to promotion and success until his mishandling of a high profile operation left one person dead and Adam "on the beach". Now he's got a new partner, a new case, and a new chance to resurrect his career, hunting a legendary serial killer known as the Crow in a remote mountain resort in Oregon.

Deputy Sheriff Robert Haskell may seem laid-back, but he's a tough and efficient cop - and he's none too thrilled to see feebs on his turf - even when one of the agents is smart, handsome, and probably gay. But a butchered body in a Native American museum is out of his small town department's league. For that matter, icy, uptight Adam Darling is out of Rob's league, but that doesn't mean Rob won't take his best shot.

Solid JL tale

This was a good-as-expected JL tale - engaging story with a good romantic element and sweet ending. The narration, if paced a little slow for my preferences, matched the story perfectly with a strong voice that created a good mental picture of the two equally strong main characters.

Another good rendition of a Josh Lanyon novel

So once again I've really enjoyed listening to the audio version of a Josh Lanyon book that I've previously read. The story is very good, with a well crafted mystery and a believable relationship between the two main characters that ends with a HFN that feels as if it will go into HEA territory beyond the scope of the book.

I was initially unsure about the narration of Gomez Pugh as it felt a little flat to begin with in comparison to the other audio books I've listened to recently, but his voice grew on me over the course of the novel and he differentiated between the characters well. So I will be getting more books narrated by him in future.

Overall, a good story, very well narrated, and something that I will listen to again.

Excellent thriller

The narrator was excellent, clear distinction voices for each character.

The plot was good and held my attention throughout. The relationship aspect didn't get in the way and was quite naturally incorporated into the story. plot before sex, thank goodness.

I loved the two main characters, they were believable and serviced the story.

I do like Josh's books and would love a follow up to these characters.

Superb mystery and romance!

This is a well-crafted murder/mystery combined with a budding romance and wonderfully narrated by Gomez Pugh.

Move over Darling ..........

Slow burn typical start to a JL tale, building to a full action finish. Murder in the woods past and present causes the need for an FBI investigation. Adam and Rob solve the crimes but find time for other things: loving but not graphic.

Tear jerking ending, tissues required.

Well written, well planned, beautifully narrated book.

RECOMMENDED

Well...

I I would have to say that this story was interesting. I thought that the pace was pretty slow so when it picked up I was pretty excited. The relationship between two main characters kind of danced around each other. The narrator's voice was a little on the dry side but after you can look past that it turns out to be a really good story. if you like a good mystery story with a little gay romance ,but not much, then this is the store for you. I would have to say the most exciting part about this book was trying to put the clues together to figure out who killed who and what was going to happen next. Like I said earlier, I'm not lying about the pace being pretty slow. So if you are patient it's worth the wait towards the end but if you're not then this book probably isn't for you.

Of course it's fantastic!

Josh, a fantastic storyteller, and Gomez, a fantastic teller of stories!
This powerful combo of talent should just be an auto-buy for lovers of great mystery with m/m undertones.
The only regret is the wait period between installments.

Almost gave up on this one too Josh...but didn't..

Any additional comments?

The story is you..definitely you, thank goodness especially after the last one I read of yours. This got better after the first 4 chapters...so Dear Reader, I'd say go for it and hang in there until the end. I really like Gomez reading your books, Josh.

Nice mystery and great performance

This is another really nice Josh Lanyon mystery. Adam (who was first introduced in Fair Game) is a "disgraced" FBI agent who screwed up an assignment and as a result is put on "morgue" patrol chasing a serial killer. This investigation leads him to rural Oregon where he meets Deputy Robert. Although the mystery they are investigating is dominant in the story, the romance between the men is also very present. They start out as convenient f**k buddies and through working together and some pretty hairy situations, romance blooms. There is also a solid cast of supporting characters which really adds to the story. This is a HFN ending, but it was satisfying. I hope to see a sequel with this couple in the future. Gomez Pugh is masterful in his performance. He is a favorite narrator and really delivers.

A very enjoyable mystery...

With a bit of romance. I really liked both of the main characters in this book. The mystery was very good-a serial killer on the loose-that held my interest throughout the story. I wish that there were more books in this series! The narrator was excellent, as always!❤️

Disappointed

I love Josh Lanyon' books! I especially like the series that this spins off from. However, this book seems so unlike her others. The writing was too simple and not as clever or interesting. I thought my head was going to spin off after the millionth "he said". What got me hooked with her other books were the witticisms, great character build, and suspenseful writing (features I feel fall flat in this one). It didn't quite hit the mark for me.

Another Strong Reading by Pugh

This narrator is consistently great at his readings. He avoids monotone in the narrative sections, and gives each character a distinctive voice.

The mystery is unpredictable. The romance believable. No cheating. HEA. I read & listened to this book (switching back and forth) AFTER I read the first two Art of Murder novels. The storyline for much of the book overlaps with The Monet Murders, and it was fun to see the different perspectives of two side-characters in this book, one of who is one of the main characters in Monet. Well done.

One of the Best Lanyon Mysteries - Pugh is Amazing

This is one of my all-time favorite Josh Lanyon stories, plus I love Gomez Pugh, so it was double the pleasure to do the audio version of Winter Kill.

Besides how much I love Adam (and the fact that he's Tucker's ex) this really is a great mystery. So many great twists and turns, plus the ending!!! Love it. It's also really fun after The Mermaid Murders and The Monet Murders to get to see this side of Sam (and by that I mean not acting like a total dick).

That was so great :)
