About this listen

 The unthinkable has happened at London's Peculiar Crimes Unit. In the depths of winter, a member of staff has been found murdered, and everyone who works there is suddenly a suspect.

But Arthur Bryant and John May, the eccentric elderly detectives who run London's strangest crime division, aren't on hand to solve the crime. They've ventured into the heart of the English countryside, only to become stranded on a desolate snowbound section of road.

I love the two main characters. Bryant habits have kept me smiling throughout the book. Such an "oddball" but totally likeable .

Good enjoyable book, surprises in several places, and well read. I think the narrator has the characters off very well. I can tell who is talking by the way he portrays them.

But: I wish the books were shorter. This one at 10hrs took a while to get through, earlier 15hr books are hard work .... But I still like them. Problem is, is that you need to "listen" to all the details or you miss the plot. You cannot listen going to bed, as a bit dark and also brain not as good at listening. Hence it takes me a while to finish and I skip back into easier listening books ... Then need to finish them.

Would recommend if you have staying power and LISTEN to detail well.

Quirky characters. Laugh out loud lines. Occasional rambling monologues in keeping with one of the characters that were ‘tedious’ but also informative, interesting and often funny.
Two stories in one, with twists and turns, and an unexpected outcomes to both. Satisfyingly quirky & funny conclusion overall.

Looking forward to listening to more from this author. :))

I enjoyed this book but the different threads of the story seemed to be so disjointed for quite a while. The timeline of how long the vehicles were stuck in the snow seemed endless and I'm sure people would have suffered hypothermia before the serial killer got them. There was no mention of the poor child's fate at the end of the book. But I didn't see the twist coming so that was clever. These heroes Bryant and May always make you think about the human condition in a way few others do. Overall I like these stories and this author.

The twin story lines and the development of the many characters works well.

The usual smattering of facts about places and events as well as the origins of various expressions keeps it entertaining while the stories play out.
