Summary

My name is Callie Penrose - and I'm a rookie spell-slinger from Kansas City. I work part-time for the Vatican Shepherds, hunting monsters for them, but you won't find me in the pews on Sundays. Not really my thing.

But when my boss is injured by a werewolf, it's time for me to put my big girl pants on. Because the Spear of Longinus - the one that allegedly stabbed Jesus on the Cross - has surfaced, and it's going up for auction. And every flavor of monster in my city wants it. Even a demon and a Nephilim, just for fun.

The only way to survive the war and get the spear first is to team up with Nate Temple, a handsome, reckless wizard from St. Louis. But he has a dark side, too, and I don't fully trust him, despite what my body tells me.

Framed for murders I didn't commit, I find I've become Kansas City's most hated wizard overnight. Because keeping the spear will get me killed, but giving it away will get everyone else killed. And letting Nate handle it will only paint me as weak. What's a girl to do?

Especially when Hell knows more about my past than I do...

Narrator ruined this for me

The story is great. The issue is the narrator. It sounds like Google translate, when it's not characters talking it's very robotic and hard to listen to

Get this to complete Nate Temple gaps

I really enjoyed the Temple Chronicles, so it's great to find out more about Callie Penrose.
I'm an huge Audible listener, generally preferring Urban Fantasy series to keep me company, while reading completely different types of books. Linnea Sage is decent narrator, though there are occasional mispronounciations. She has a pleasant voice though, and I'm sure she'll warm to this series.
There was some background noise, I could hear conversation as and I think even some traffic in the background, but actually that didn't bother me at all.
Shayne Silvers has created a wonderful world in which honour and friendship are key to the whole character of his stories, and I'm happy to immerse myself into it. I know I'll listen to the whole series again once I've caught up, and same with the Temple Chronicles.
keep at it Shayne, I want to be able to escape into Temple's (and Callie's) world for the next 25 years. Thank you.

I loved everything about this book HOWEVER

Honestly I love the Temple universe amazing, the narrator was perfect in my humble opinion.... BUT THAT DAMMED BACKGROUND NOISE PISSED ME OFF!!!! But nonetheless thank you for this piece of gold.

great book dull reader

Narrator spoke as if the book was a race to finsh. could hear many noises in the backgroud making her even harder to follow and enjoy. the book itself is amazing and just needs to be rerecorded with a sound studio and a better narrator.

Second listen

Love the story but had a hard time with the original narrator whose name I do not recall. I was a bit confused but delighted with the new narration. This new version has earned five stars.

Background noise too distracting

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I would recommend this book because Shayne Silvers is a great author.

What three words best describe Linnea Sage’s performance?

Her performances was good. She portrayed each character very well. The background noise was awful. It sounds like a TV playing, and you can hear car horns and sirens throughout the book.

Silvers Rock!

This book was awesome. Very hard to step away from. Tried listening to it at work but got distracted from my work by the story. Fantastic storyline!

Same story line different author.

This isn't a bad book. I was able to listen to the whole thing without any real complaints. however... I am really getting tire tired of main characters that lack commonsense. Things are going wrong in your let blame it on everyone you know and trust except the new guy or girl in your life even though it is obvious who did it.

Fun and engaging. While still entertaining the questions of good and evil

This irreverent, funny (except when it is most appropriate to be serious) novel has it all. A spitfire heroine, her sidekick, her mentor, and a smartass bad boy. Joseph Campbell is grinning, seeing the Hero’s Journey reinvented.

The novel does all this while entertaining the questions of religion, relationships, and good vs evil.

A+ recommended. Not high literature, but not mere brain candy either, _Unchained_ definitely leaves the listener/reader wanting more.

Oh boy..

It has a great start and was keeping my interest, but it gets all 50 shades of grey real fast. The heroine is constantly pansying out and getting saved by the dudes. She's constantly just having dinner and telling you what level of flirtatious she thinks these guys are being. 5 hours in they FINALLY are going to get to business and accomplish something, and part one of this guys plan is "let's have steak and salad and make sure you put on this lipstick before you drink that wine so we leave evidence we were here." Jesus Christ I was losing my mind at that point. I tried, I think 5+ hours out of 8 was enough to validate a review. Couldn't finish it. If they would have skipped the wine and started saving the day I might have finished it. But it's just date after date. The only bad ass in the book is injured in the first chapter and doing nothing. I hope Callie sacrifices herself in the end. If you're into the twilight type stories you'll probably love it.

No spoilers

Ok here's the thing I have mixed feelings about this book. It is the first I've read by this author so I don't know if all his book are written in the manner that it was also in taking into consideration it's the first book of a series. The book was basically made up of questions callie keep asking and very little answers to so so Manny questions. It also became a bit much when in after thoughts(example) I stood there in my yoga pants and sports bra (after thought added) because my shirt was in the chair why would the author add that. It's just one example because there were many after thoughts he kept adding it bugged. But this book intrigue me also at the end you get to hear a chapter of the next book and the na na na Batman snark of callie is pushing me to want more from her. So I may do one more. The narrator was ok I've listen to better. She inserts this laugh or amusement in parts that don't feel right. Anyhow I haven't decided yet to go fourth or not. Time will tell.
