About this listen

'One of the most important books on policing and power. A must read.' Vikram Dodd, The Guardian

This is the official autobiography of Neil Basu, the man at the heart of modern British policing. Turmoil offers an urgent, insider account of power, racism and reform - and the realities of life in public service.

In Turmoil, Neil Basu, the first person of colour to serve as Assistant Commissioner in the Met, offers an unflinching look at the structural racism embedded in the UK’s justice system. From the aftermath of Stephen Lawrence’s murder to the London riots, Basu was there for the defining moments of modern policing, and now he’s telling the truth from the inside.

With clarity, courage and compassion, Basu holds a mirror up to British policing, examining how racism, political interference and systemic injustice have shaped the force from within. This is a powerful contribution to Britain’s ongoing conversation on race, power and the state. Turmoil is essential reading for anyone interested in the realities of institutional racism and social justice in the UK, offering a vital new perspective on how we can move towards true accountability.

Together, these insights form a compelling case for change, and act as a timely reminder that the work belongs to all of us.

As an avid listener to the Crime Agents podcast I thought I'd give this a go and was really pleased I did. A very honest, reflective and well written account of a very impressive career. Not afraid to highlight the battles fought and the regrets felt still, Neil's humility and sense of responsibility to the job and the public is evident throughout. I hope he's enjoying retirement, he most definitely deserves it! Overall - an excellent listen.

This book confirms what many already believe: Neil Basu is the Met Police Commissioner we never had—but should have. His vision, integrity, and commitment to fairness shine through every page. Turmoil is essential reading for anyone who cares about justice, policing, or public service in modern Britain.

A great insight into modern day policing.

Really interesting book on life as as a police officer from an ethnic minority rising through the Met’s ranks. Honest and reflective, I would recommend to anyone who wants to understand what it takes to operate in a high level post in the public sector.

Well written and well read, the best book I have downloaded this year.

Fascinating and well written

Incredible how much responsibility weighs on the shoulders of The Met, both its senior ranks and beat officers. I felt I learned a lot but it doesn't leave one with an overall positive feeling, especially with regards the culture (which we already knew to be lacking a moral compass at times) and the influence of politicians (which leaves me gravely concerned about the rise in populism). The line "over-policed but under-protected" will remain with me.

Insightful
