Living in the Belgian Congo with her husband in the 1960s, Fran’s mother became pregnant with a daughter. However, right after she gave birth in the hospital, she felt strange. Unbeknownst to anyone, another daughter was on the way, but before anybody responded, an hour had passed. Because of the delay, Fran was born with cerebral palsy. Growing up with her siblings in Africa, Fran always felt different. When everyone else was playing and having fun, she would watch and wish she could join in. After the family moved to Scotland and Fran grew older, her hurt turned into anger, self-hatred, and suicidal depression. Then one day, someone looked at her and saw a woman to love, and that was the start of her journey to self-acceptance. Fran has written the painful truth about her life to help listeners understand how disabled adults really feel. In her revealing account, she shows just how hard it is to maintain the appearance of a "normal” life. More importantly, out of her million and one mistakes have come lessons in real acceptance, peace, and joy, which she would like to share with her listeners.

A touching story of the authors experience of living with cerebral palsy. The impact of cerebral palsy on personhood. I now have some insight into what it feels like for children/young people, women and mothers who live with cerebral palsy. A must read for all Health Care Professionals or anybody who wants to understand what it feels like to live with a physical disability.

I loved listening to this book. It presented real facts in an storyline.
I’d just like to add, being in a wheelchair is not the worst thing that can happen to you. It’s all that goes with it resonated though.

The truth of the story

A deeply honest memoir of a life marked by grief and disappointment. Although the author has a multitude of reasons to be sad or angry, I was rather hoping for her to find joy or at least acceptance. I can’t help wondering if the massive chip on her shoulder had something to do with her lack of success in jobs. Spending these nine hours with her was illuminating and interesting, but not at all heartwarming. She is self-aware, And that is endearing. I wish her well.

I was captured from the beginning. I am so thankful that my curiosity took me into this book.
Although Trapped is dealing with Fran’s personal experiences of growing up and overcoming the cerebral palsy that has disabled and blighted her entire life it became for me a revelation on my own reactions to disability whether emotional, physical, or social.
In the catharsis of the emotional journey that was, is, her life I saw a way to revisit lessons of intolerance visited on my understanding of my self worth and so re-evaluate my opinion and now I too am on a journey of self acceptance.
I reflected on my biases and reactions to others that I judged to be not like “us”!
I ended up by relating more to the shared feelings of needing to be more than I am in order to fit into my perception of the status quo. There were times when I forgot Fran’s disability and empathised purely as a fellow sojourner.
Thank you Fran your spotlight shines not only on your disability but on the values we allow others to label us with across the board of social acceptability.
Lest we forget. We each are as uniquely beautiful and valuable as our individual fingerprints!
