Summary
Just outside Los Angeles, a prisoner hidden away for 70 years sits up, gets off the bed and disappears through a solid wall.
In Australia, a magician impresses audiences by producing real elephants. Nobody realizes it's not an illusion.
Across the world, individuals and ancient organizations with supernatural power suddenly detect the presence of something even they can't understand.
At the center of it all, Seb Varden, a 32-year old musician with a secret in his past, slits his wrists, is shot dead and run over on the freeway. He's had better days.
Seb is about to discover the universe is a far more complicated place than he'd ever imagined.

Not for English audiences
Quite how you get a job reading an audiobook with a key character from England, when you cannot do an English accent, is beyond me. It has made this book unbearable to listen to, however the story turns out. I'll buy a hard copy and hope the US accents in my head are better than this English one was in my ears.

Those who have ever heard a woman speak, beware...
Any additional comments?
As a Londoner myself, I'm used to hearing Americans butchering London accents. So at first I thought it was because the character Mira was British that the reader was stretching out every last word of the sentences she spoke. But then in Chapter 15 (which is as far as I have gotten into this story) another female character is introduced whom has been given the same treatment. I can only describe it as 'cooing' and it is extremely irritating. I've never met anyone that speaks like this, British or otherwise.
As well as this, the story is not particularly compelling. The only thing that seems to be in any really peril is the life of the main character who is apparently invincible anyway, (it's written in the publishers summary that he has slit his wrists , been shot dead and been run over on the freeway), and regardless, I find myself not much caring about him either way.

Nope - I lost it
I'm not sure what happened here, but I've had to abandon the book mid-way through.
I'm 12 chapters in and still really don't have any idea what's going on - I like the idea of setting up lots of little threads of this and that, to keep us guessing and weave them together artfully later on. But - 12 chapters in and I have just a handful of threads I don't understand.
One more titchy niggle, not really worth mentioning but while I'm on the subject... ~ the reader's english accent really bugged me - it's not bad exactly, but it sounds like David Essex which I find massively confusing.
The blurb seemed to promise a great story, and if anyone's minded to write the book I hoped for here I'm all ears. Until then sadly this book and I are not friends and will, with regret on my side at least, go our separate ways.

A Punt
Looking for something for my walk to work. I find authors I never heard of a gamble. But I really enjoyed it. Read well by Todd Boyce. I heartily recommend this really good story. Nicely finished too.

Pitifully poorly written
I started this book with anticipation as a holiday novel. I really tries to give it my best shot and struggled on and on..what other choice did I have after purchasing it? But I finally gave up on it after continual "he said, he said, she said" and I felt quite sorry for the narrator who was obviously doing the best he could with a badly written story. I can't recommend it.

Great first book
Thought I would give this book a go and It didn't disappoint.
Had no problems with the reader which is very important to me.
Great twists and terns just hope the next book holds up to this great standard that's been set.

Great listen.
The book was enjoyable, and loved the authors view on things that he made fit in his fantasy.
*note. There are some reviews that almost attack the author, i both agree and disagree with them.
Point 1, The book is good. (not great not amazing, reminds me of a trudi canavan apprentice =) )
Point 2, Sure the narrator is interesting (the accents and so on), but for me i could look past this.
Point 3, It does feel like there is some things missing, and the story arc is uneven.
Would i recommend it, Yes. Would this be the first book i would recommend. No.

Poor narrator, average story
The author did a lot of 'telling' not 'showing' which made it feel like most of the book was just a big info-dump. It seemed like a cheat to introduce 'Seb2' as a lazy way to explain everything that's happening.
The story was a good concept but it would have been nice to have a few twists and turns along the way. I found it laughable that one character works out exactly what mana is by a pure stab in the dark after only knowing about its existence for a week, yet the people using it for thousands of years had no clue!
The ending was fine, if a bit predictable.
I got this audiobook as part of a '3 books for 1 credit' deal and I don't regret getting it, but I would have been disappointed if I had spent a whole credit. I am curious what happens next, so perhaps I will give the next in the series ago if I'm struggling to find my next listen.
Overall, I'd score it 2. Perhaps a 3 but the narrator being unable to do an English accent nearly made me stop listening completely.

What a terrible book
Yet another highly rated book that turns out to be laughably bad. The writng is awful, huge leaps in the plot that we are expected to accept with barely the slightest explanation of character's motivations or real personality. It's like something written by a teenager. So often the characters will do something and then there's a brief, awkward note to justify their actions that just feels tacked on and wholly unsatisfying. I can't believe I've wasted hours of my life listening to this!

Unusual concept
Intriguing idea woven into an interesting story. It certainly leaves you wanting to know what happens next.
