About this listen

Exclusively from Audible

The first of six in Trollope's series of the Chronicles of Barsetshire introducing the fictional cathedral town of Barchester and the characters of Septimus Harding, the Warden, and his son-in-law Archdeacon Grantly.

The Warden concerns the moral dilemma of the conscientious Reverend Septimus Harding, who finds himself at the centre of a bitter conflict between defenders of Church privilege and the reformers of the mid-Victorian period.

His daughter's suitor, John Bold, is a political radical and passionate reformer who launches a campaign against Harding's management of the financial affairs of the charity, thus shattering the atmosphere of the once tranquil town of Barchester. The scandal is not improved when Harding's indelicate son-in-law, Archdeacon Grantly, leaps to his defence.

The audiobook is a charming social comedy and love story that portrays life in an English cathedral town whilst looking at the larger social and political issues.

The Warden was Trollope's first literary success which paved the way for him to later leave his career as a Post Office Inspector and become a prolific and much-respected author of the Victorian era. He eventually published 47 novels, many of which are still popular and well-loved today due to their timeless quality and parallels with contemporary society.

This book is shorter than some of the other Anthony Trollope's and the story a little singular in subject matter. It was brought to life though by the narration of Timothy West, which couldn't be faulted.

Just wonderful! A classic piece of literature. Expertly read by Timothy West.
It’s Mr West’s narration that entirely makes it come alive, I can only imagine that this is how Trollope would have read it himself! West’s perfect intonation, character voices and delivery of Trollope’s hilarious social faux pas and mishaps had me frequently giggling and sometimes having to stop the playback, while I waited to stop laughing and could listen again properly.
Delighted that it’s free with my subscription. Thank you Audible!! I suffer from a health condition that means I am frequently having to lie down and rest for hours at a time, which can be really boring, Audible is a sanity saver.
I have popped the whole series in my library to keep me going for the next couple of weeks.

I highly recommend anything read by Sheila Hancock also, as she has the same incredible voice acting talent too.

Fabulous, witty, clever, perfectly narrated.

This is a much gentler, simpler story than the others I've read in the series. It's a good introduction to the style of Anthony Trollope if you've not read him before, but I wonder if I'd have been so keen to read the later books if I'd have read this first. the narration by Timothy West is superb as always. He is my voice of Trollope and I wouldn't want to hear him read by anyone else.

A Simple Start to the Chronicles

Timothy West's narration of Trollope is sublime and has a voice of comfort, wisdom and when Trollope gets a tadge long-winded still carries you along. The moral dilemmas of church sinecures and the way when money is involved affects the protagonists. And it is in their different reactions, the guilt, the temptations, and the family relationships make the writing alive and timeless.

A Total Treat!
