About this listen

Marooned in outer space after an attack on his ship, Nomad, Gulliver Foyle lives to obsessively pursue the crew of a rescue vessel that had intended to leave him to die.

When it comes to pop culture, Alfred Bester (1913-1987) is something of an unsung hero. He wrote radio scripts, screenplays, and comic books (in which capacity he created the original Green Lantern Oath). But Bester is best known for his science fiction novels, and The Stars My Destination may be his finest creation. With its sly potshotting at corporate skullduggery, The Stars My Destination seems utterly contemporary, and has maintained its status as an underground classic for over 50 years.

A visceral animated story that painted Steampunk pictures in my head. I heard about it in a podcast - The Sketpics Guide to the Universe.

Timeless Space Extravaganza

A surreal story rich with imaginative scenarios and technology. This saga has more teleological ideas than most books of this genre, especially given the publication date. The language is accessible but creative and poetic in many places. The Calibanesque anti-hero a very unusual and provocative focal character. Sensitively and expressively interpreted by the narrator. Other authors of sci-fi have stood on the shoulders of this original venture.

Original sci-fi.

A brilliant story that keeps you hooked without ever signposting where it might go next but always having a logical and well designed path for you to follow. The character of Gully Foyle is as vibrant as any in literature and works both as a character and a metaphor for human nature.

This is a story that shows us as we are but still retains a hopeful edge. I am both surprised and gratified that this hasn’t been butchered by Hollywood yet and hope it never is, the story is perfect as it is.

A Genuine Classic

I've read this book a few times over the years and I really enjoyed this audiobook version which was really well narrated.
Amazing that Alfred Bester published it in 1956, I've always thought it would make a fantastic film but it would need a visionary director and a huge budget to get it right.

Excellent sci fi tale

Plot, pacing, language, ideas, character, worldbuilding - it has it all. Engaging from the opening sentence. Really well performed. Head and shoulders above other ‘included’ books on audible that I’ve encountered (so far)

Top quality Sci-Fi
