About this listen
In the murky shadows of an alley lies a female’s severed hand. On the tenement rooftop above is the corpse belonging to that hand, a red-haired woman dressed all in black, the body nearly decapitated. Two strands of silver hair — not human — cling to her body. They are Rizzoli’s only clues, but they’re enough for her and medical examiner Maura Isles to make a startling discovery: This violent death had a chilling prequel. Nineteen years earlier, a horrifying murder-suicide in a Chinatown restaurant left five people dead. One woman connected to that massacre is still alive: a mysterious martial arts master who knows a secret she dares not tell, a secret that lives and breathes in the shadows of Chinatown. A secret that may not even be human. Now she’s the target of someone, or something, deeply and relentlessly evil. Cracking a crime resonating with bone-chilling echoes of an ancient Chinese legend, Rizzoli and Isles must outwit an unseen enemy with centuries of cunning — and a swift, avenging blade.
©2011 Tess Gerritsen (P)2011 Brilliance Audio, Inc.There is only one thing that I would caution against because it isn't given away with the book blurb, although it does become apparent towards the end; if you find child abuse triggering you might want to give this story a miss. It's certainly not as graphic as some books out there, and shouldn't be a problem for most people, but if you're feeling a bit vulnerable you might want to leave it until you're not as likely to be triggered. Don't be tempted to pass this book by completely though, it's too good for that to happen.
So far I think this story could very well be my favourite Rizzoli and Isles novel, and up until this point I didn't think much could top Ice Cold.
Tanya Eby does a good job with the narration, and that means this is a pleasure to listen to right until the end.
Overall a great attempt at both plot and execution from all concerned.
Will be a firm favorite. 1 of the best R&I's plots

Intertwined with this you have a really gritty story based in Chinatown which allows yet another detective to brought into the family and add more body to the whole investigative field.
While being a little predictable at time within the story there are still points that startle so you have to keep listening closely or you can lost on one of the red herrings.
I really enjoyed this story because it was a woman based investigation, that is the perpetrators of the crimes being investigated were women (or maybe not), which made a change from the usual suspects.
The one thing that puzzles me in this last two or three books though is, does Regina realise that she has got a mother because Jane seems to be away for days at a time and sometimes her husband is with her.
Altogether a really good listen.
