Summary

Joey McCarthy is stabbed to death in a pub car park in a random act of violence. Shortly afterwards Charlotte Stone's terminally ill mother dies, and then, within weeks, two of her teenage friends commit suicide. With her home life disintegrating and both her father and brother racing towards self-destruction, Charlotte realises that her own personal nightmare may not be over yet.

When DC Gary Goodhew finds the body of another suicide victim, he is forced to recall some deeply buried memories of an earlier death; memories which lead him to Charlotte Stone and the events in her life. From their individual points of view, they both begin to wonder whether all these tragedies are somehow linked to a bigger picture. And if they are right, then who will be the next victim?

Excellent instalment in this crime series

I love this series of detective books. Gary Goodhew is different than most of the hard done by cops that we encounter. He really wants to be a detective, has great instincts and a wonderful grandma to boot! These are best if you start with the first book and follow the series as this gives you the whole story of Gary Goodhew. Can't wait for the next instalment.

Quite gripping

Listening to my first Alison Bruce novel was a good experience. However, there were so many characters involved that I lost track of some of them, I think that this might be one occasion that the written word would have suited me better as I could 'flip back' to check.
Having said that I really enjoyed the story, it was a teaser and I was left wondering until the end, I liked the main characters and felt that the personalities were well drawn. This is worth a second listen, and, for me, is a good introduction to Alison Bruce.
The narration was good, and didn't intrude in any way.

Not the best

Having now heard the first four books in the series, I still cannot see any reason to give these books more than a two star rating. My review of the first four books is the same.

Far too much detail, too many characters too soon, and too long before the main character makes an appearance to solve the crimes.

There is dialogue which cannot be easily attributed to a character due to the lack of signposting, and other passages which come across as convoluted.

Anything is possible in fiction, but there still has to be a believable element. A police force where the youngest detective is allowed to do what he pleases and has an unchecked, unhealthy, rivalry with a colleague, for me at least, is a step too far.

Book one, I thought I’d strayed into the romance section. Book three could have been from the adult section. As for book four, I could have wandered into the Twilight Zone.

Needless to say, I will not be completing the series, and I may have to be more careful about ordering books in a series.

Enjoying the series

The Cambridge backdrop continues to help frame the story to create another engrossing DCI Goodhew murder tale. Once started I find this Alison Bruce book hard to put down, 8 hours in a day is testament to a well written book and fantastic narration.

I wanted to like this, and started listening twice

Unfortunately the narrator is so boring, and absolutely incapable of distinguishing between male or female characters. This makes the narrative very boring. Such a pity. Not going to finish it, sorry.

Disappointing

Couldn’t gel with this book, not the best listening experience, didn’t keep me focused until the last few chapters. But I stuck with it and did finish it eventually...

Nah

This could have been a good book but I struggled to really grasp it. Firstly, there were too many characters and I was getting confused with who was who. I had to restart but was still mixing the characters up. Secondly, there were bits to the story that had no relevance so where I was expecting things to tie up, they didn't. I'm still waiting to see where the prologue fitted with the story and just other things made this book just mwah. I was a tad disappointed. it could have been me and my lack of understanding but this book just didn't do it for me.

Another engrossing story

I enjoy Alison’s books and think Johnathan has the perfect voice for them
I used to live on Parker’s Piece 37 years ago and a lot of the places bring back memories

Really boring

First book I’ve given up on in ages....
Especially boring narration and dull characters I didn’t care about
