Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

THE BESTSELLER THAT DEFINED AN AGE

Penguin presents the audio edition of The Secret History, read by the author.

'Everything, somehow, fit together; some sly and benevolent Providence was revealing itself by degrees and I felt myself trembling on the brink of a fabulous discovery, as though any morning it was all going to come together---my future, my past, the whole of my life---and I was going to sit up in bed like a thunderbolt and say oh! oh! oh!'

Under the influence of a charismatic classics professor, a group of clever, eccentric misfits at a New England college discover a way of thought and life a world away from their banal contemporaries. But their search for the transcendent leads them down a dangerous path, beyond human constructs of morality.

Gripping story perfect narrator

Probably the best book I have ever read and the audiobook did not disappoint. Donna Tartt is the perfect narrator, she really makes the story come alive!

Brilliant book. Terrible narration!

Would you try another book written by Donna Tartt or narrated by Donna Tartt?

Why oh why do authors, or their agents, feel that because they are good writers, they are good narrators. Leaving it to professional performers is a much better idea! If you want to listen to The Secret History in audiobook form, try and find the ISIS recording read by Adam Simms, it is perfectly performed and does this exceptional novel justice.

Brilliant book, affected narration

This is one of my favourite books. Read it years ago & loved the beauty of the language & dis functional characters. Wanted to reread but lockdown has fuzzed me so went for the audiobook. Really disappointing on the delivery. The book is narrated by the main male character & this missed the mark with the author putting on accents & ‘ male’ voices, Bunny’s voice was really grating. Shame, could of been so much more enjoyable. Take the time & read the book.

A long book, well read

An interesting novel. Sad. I really enjoyed the fact that Donna Tartt herself narrates the book.

Gripping and well read

I read the book when it came out and wanted to reread but don't have time. This is the first audio book I have listened to. I thought the narration was really well done, she has a great voice, and enjoyed the experience of listening to it. I used the Echo and found this much easier to navigate than on the phone which kept losing my place, this caused me to give up the first time. Second time, I got through it really quickly.

Good story. Not a great performance.

Enjoyed the story but not the performance which was a great shame. As with all Tartt’s books, it was a little wordy and lengthy in places.
