Summary

Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire are intelligent children. They are charming, and resourceful, and have pleasant facial features. Unfortunately, they are exceptionally unlucky.

In the first two books alone, the three youngsters encounter a greedy and repulsive villain, itchy clothing, a disastrous fire, a plot to steal their fortune, a lumpy bed, a deadly serpent, a large brass reading lamp, a long knife, and a terrible odor.

In the tradition of great storytellers, from Dickens to Dahl, comes an exquisitely dark comedy that is both literary and irreverent, hilarious and deftly crafted. Never before has a tale of three likeable and unfortunate children been quite so enchanting, or quite so uproariously unhappy.

Woah

So these are great books and I love them dearly, but I have never appreciated them half so much as I do when hearing them read by Tim Curry. Curry's Olaf (or, if you like, Stephano) may well give me nightmares into my 80s. His reading of Snicket brought me to laughter and his Beaudelaire orphans very nearly brought me to tears. This, as I said, a wonderful book, but Tim Curry's reading of it makes it at least twice as good.

My favorite in the series (so far)

So far I've read through book 9 and this has been my favorite. This part of the story really engages the reader and leaves you excited to see what happens next.

Tim Currys reading is icing on the cake.

Tim Curry and Lemony Snicket = brilliant

such a great story to listen to! Tim Curry does a brilliant job narrating. the story is dark and humorous, and curry captures it perfectly.

Too much coughing, but brilliant!

I’m an adult, but loved the story anyway. Tim Curry is amazing, I enjoyed his performance thoroughly, which in this case means entirely and without reservation. I do wonder if the story may be too scary for younger children, but maybe they are playing Call of Duty and not listening to audio books anyway.

Adding Curry to Lemon(y) makes for a yummy recipe!

Adding Curry to Lemon(y) makes for a yummy recipe!

I had tried to get into Lemony Snicket books many times in the past, but they just felt dry and needed something to inject a little flavor. That flavor, for me, seems to be the rich and fluid voice of Mr Tim Curry. He has been a favorite actor of mine for so many years, that I knew of he were narrating this book then I must give it a chance. I am so glad I did! His voice and enthusiasm for the story put so many visions into my head that I can now imagine him reading any of the other Lemony Snicket books (if I can't find him narrating them on Audible 😉).
