LDB's debut novel is still my favourite of the two titles, but this sophomore novel still makes a mark of its own. Blackburn's characters are well-developed and relatable, with the authenticity of Nigerian, Caribbean and other Black cultures coming to the fore with alacrity that will bring a knowing smile to your face.
The tale is full of twists and turns that will leave you desperate to stay off the pause button - yet, Blackburn's writing style conjures up sentences and phrases so beautiful that there were moments I DID have to stop, to create a bookmark, so that I could note down some of those wonderfully crafted lines.
The tale draws on significant themes with convincing realism, exploring the flaws, foibles and fears of the human species, while also highlighting social ills - including sexism and racism -through Temi's unflinching eyes.
Eager listeners will spot the tie-in with Yinka's world, too!
The performance from Faith Alabi is laudable, with the narrator voicing multiple accents believably. The varying intonations of each character make each voice recognisable, making it easier for us as listeners to follow the conversation when the pace picks up.
One criticism: I didn't get why Temi occasionally becomes American? Words and phrases like 'parking lot' and 'elevator' are used - which I find weird for a character based in South London! Perhaps Blackburn is trying to reach a wider audience, but this was a bit disappointing, seeing as Temi and the other characters otherwise seem to be credible representatives of their cultural context.
On the whole, this novel will make you smile, open your mouth in shock at times, and remind you of the power of a second chance. Don't delay in starting it!

In summary an easy read. I enjoyed the author’s first novel far better but appreciated a plus sized lead and the cultural references.
