About this listen

All life on Earth has been stolen away by The System.

It was transported to another world at the behest of a distant galactic empire that lives in terror of humanity's potential.

Ben - just a normal, if not slightly above average guy - had been about to go on the first real vacation of his adult life. But plans changed. Now, he must contend with danger and mystery in a world full of monsters, magic, and treasure. Armed with nothing but his wits and a special item given to him by The System, he embarks on a damn good adventure.

Written by Matthew Howry, better known to Royal Road fans as Salty Waters.

This book was one of the free offers with audible membership and I couldn't resist the title but when I'd reached the end I couldn't resist buying the whole series.
The plot is a fantasy sci fi collection of surreal, hilarious, violent, imaginative, RPG, thoughtful, sentimental, heroic, poetic and intriguing storytelling which has created an epic adventure for a naked man and his companions whom include a shark and a slug.
The tome is so well written that within the short time the shark is in the story he ends up stuck in a tree, dying and I was sad to lose his story arc.
The narrative was the best I've ever heard and enhanced the lines by bringing the characters to life and keeping the mood and pace of every page.
I've enjoyed a wide variety of books including classics by Dickens, Conan Doyle and Tolstoy. I've laughed at simple stories by PG Woodhouse and Sue Townsend. I've been thrilled by King, Lovecraft and Koontz. I've read sci fi by such authors Asimov, Philip K Dick, Ellison, Iain M Banks, Andy Weir. I also have a deep experience of fantasy fiction following Douglas Adams, Terry Pratchet, Robert Rankin, Jasper Fforde, Jonathan Stroud and Heide Goody and Grant. So I believe I've a diverse knowledge and this Damn Adventure Series rates among the absolute best I've been lucky enough to find.
thank you and congratulations to the author and narrator!

This was a free book and was so good I've bought the whole series

This was like a book of 2 halves. When Ben is communicating with other characters it is really interesting and at times absolutely hilarious. But sometimes, it can get a little bit 'get on with it'. That said, the good certainly outweighs the bad, and there is one definite reason for recommending this book and that is the powerhouse performance by Johnathan McClain. I fully intend researching any books that he has narrated and providing the subject matter is at least slightly interesting, I am going to purchase it. I have heard some really good narrators, but this guy is on another level here, an absolute masterclass performance. Looking forward to listening to book 2 as soon as I have listened to the 3 books I have already downloaded.

Amazing performance by Johnathan McClain

This is a gem of a book. Relaxed tempo without ever being boring or droning. Original in many ways while still keeping true to the GameLit genre. I especially like how the author stays in the moment yet still manages to convey a large meta plot of epic proportions.

Strongly recommended!
