Summary

Being a mage isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Especially when you’ve witnessed the end of the world and the demise of all you’ve ever loved.

As a particle physicist, William Jenkins is as unsuited to survival on an alien world as any normal 30-something post-doc could be. Thankfully, he’s not alone. With an AI, magic, scientific curiosity, and, most improbably, a deity on his side, Will must come to terms with his new reality before otherworldly terrors forever extinguish the light of hope on this new world.

Meanwhile, as the forces of darkness amass to invade her home, Effni Naridia, Qaseri Ranger, and Guardian of her peoples, must face her own demons. By undertaking a trial, Effni could determine not only the fate of her city but unravel a mystery aeons in the making.

The Last Physicist features elements of progression fantasy and Gamelit and is perfect for those who enjoy stories by Andrew Rowe, Will Wight, and Andy Weir.

Warning. This novel contains questionable quantum mechanics, general relativity, and magic.

Note: This book also features profanity, vivid depictions of violence, pain, and gore, along with depictions of mental health issues (including PTSD, generalized anxiety, and depression) some listeners may find distressing.

Fantasy and Reality combine.

This is by no means a perfect book, but it has now become one of my all-time favourite LitRPG's.

A dorky physicist/programmer (hybrid?) helped create a new type of AI whom, by the protagonist off-hand comment, predicts an underway experiment will cause the end of the world. End of the world happens and basically, we get a very entertaining superhero origins story following the two.

There are ups and downs, over-powered abilities, high-impact fights, all grounded in reality... There's also a lot of whining. Most of which you can forgive as it's trying to be realistic. We all like to think we'd just accept and get on with it if we were in such situations, but that's untrue and we all know it... but I mean, there's a lot of whining. So much so that it grated on me consistently, but hey, I said it wasn't a perfect book.

There's is also a moment of just plain out-of-nowhere twist that doesn't flow right with events up to that point involving a bat .

It's worth a listen or read.

Really well written book

I am now a fan, well developed story and characters not to mention the addition of science. One of the best LitRPG books out at the moment. Can’t wait for the next one.

So close yet so far away.

Narration is EXCELLENT. Prose is often way too purple and dialogue sometimes preachy. Ugh.

Intelligent story I wish I could have written...

This is a gritty and semi dark story but WELL written and kept me entertained the full 19 hours. The main character gains power quickly but is not OP - just barely keeping pace with the challenges he faces. I felt the author was very clever in how he introduced game mechanics and fantasy tropes into what is actually more of hard science fiction. If that doesn't seem to be possible, you'll have to listen to understand. I was surprised that the other reviews were lukewarm. I found this to be a fantastic story and well worth the credit. Enough so that I decided to write this review so you wouldn't miss out on a new author that will go far. As a note, I'm one of those people that almost never leaves reviews but I'm also brutal about what I spend my almost 10 credits a month on (yes, I have a job that gives me lots of time to listen to books and am somewhat addicted). Anyway, if I don't like a story I'll happily return it and this book is definitely staying in my library. If you value your credit and are constantly looking for that next great listen, give this one a chance.

Ouch

Given a physicist, ai, and magic i was expecting a power fantasy. What I got instead was an endurance run of abject torture. Granted some people are into that and the story was gripping, I don't know if I want to subject myself to a sequel.

Fun story with a diverse male MC

This was a fun listen for all of you isekai fans.
It got heavy into the magic system, maybe too heave for some. I highly suggest picking it up, either way.

good till just before the end

why do authers feel the need to "nerf" there MC right at the end of book 1? I mean it happens so often it should be a trope but it is very annoying to me, kind of feels lazy, so that's why the story only gets 4stars.

Only the physics are semi consistent

This book is terrible about keeping its own thread or a consistent world, it feels like the book was written over 2 years in spurts of a chapter then a a few months break without looking back once. When a something is said to zero reaction then 5 minutes later said again to shocked gasps and many questions, it really breaks narririve immersion. The world also seems to retcon itself near constantly and arbitrary limit a op mc to make the plot more action-y.

Also am annoyed that this book doesn't show up if you search Soundbooth Theater, only know it came out because I go out of my way to check the website every so often.

wow! can't wait for book 2!

really, really good book!
great blend of fantasy and scifi.
while a lot of books fall into the pitfall of power leveling the character to the point of absurdity, this book doesn't. the progression of the character is met with just as many challenges. I also never found myself completely confident in any of the characters' survival which really kept me on my toes as to the fates of our enjoyable side characters and Will. I also really enjoyed learning more about Will as the story progressed. I found I enjoyed the blend of scifi and fantasy themes and in a way it reminds me of the Delvers LLC universe. Really look forward to book 2. Also all of the narrators did another wonderful job. Props to Justin and the rest of the soundbooth theater group!

A rough cut gem is still a gem.

Pretty good first entry to a series, had some strange parts, but nothing too bad.
