Summary

Being a mage isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Especially when you’ve witnessed the end of the world and the demise of all you’ve ever loved.

As a particle physicist, William Jenkins is as unsuited to survival on an alien world as any normal 30-something post-doc could be. Thankfully, he’s not alone. With an AI, magic, scientific curiosity, and, most improbably, a deity on his side, Will must come to terms with his new reality before otherworldly terrors forever extinguish the light of hope on this new world.

Meanwhile, as the forces of darkness amass to invade her home, Effni Naridia, Qaseri Ranger, and Guardian of her peoples, must face her own demons. By undertaking a trial, Effni could determine not only the fate of her city but unravel a mystery aeons in the making.

The Last Physicist features elements of progression fantasy and Gamelit and is perfect for those who enjoy stories by Andrew Rowe, Will Wight, and Andy Weir.

Warning. This novel contains questionable quantum mechanics, general relativity, and magic.

Note: This book also features profanity, vivid depictions of violence, pain, and gore, along with depictions of mental health issues (including PTSD, generalized anxiety, and depression) some listeners may find distressing.

Fantasy and Reality combine.

This is by no means a perfect book, but it has now become one of my all-time favourite LitRPG's.

A dorky physicist/programmer (hybrid?) helped create a new type of AI whom, by the protagonist off-hand comment, predicts an underway experiment will cause the end of the world. End of the world happens and basically, we get a very entertaining superhero origins story following the two.

There are ups and downs, over-powered abilities, high-impact fights, all grounded in reality... There's also a lot of whining. Most of which you can forgive as it's trying to be realistic. We all like to think we'd just accept and get on with it if we were in such situations, but that's untrue and we all know it... but I mean, there's a lot of whining. So much so that it grated on me consistently, but hey, I said it wasn't a perfect book.

There's is also a moment of just plain out-of-nowhere twist that doesn't flow right with events up to that point involving a bat .

It's worth a listen or read.

Great fun!

Great job with this book - slow but good intro and really gets into the swing - can’t wait to hear more!

A solid start

The idea is pretty standard but when you've listened to so many of this genre it's bound to get derivative. My biggest criticism of the book is the amount of time the character spends on introspection and his dark thoughts at his plight. Some authors are better at handling how to explain the world a character inhabits, I prefer to find out in a more organic way than one character explaining how things work in a rote fashion to the protagonist. There is also too much ruminating over the relationship between science and magic again in the guise of naval gazing.

It might sound like I am bashing the book but I'm only pointing out it's weaknesses as I see them. I think it is a promising start and I will read the next in the series which is as good a recommendation as you give I suppose.

Great Book

A great book of Physics storyline (should be part of the science curriculum), lovely narration. Really looking forward to Book two.

fantastic book

Great story, great narrative, definitely worth a listen. Love how this book has a mix of modern science, cultivation and leveling, a unique concept for lit rpg.

Really well written book

I am now a fan, well developed story and characters not to mention the addition of science. One of the best LitRPG books out at the moment. Can’t wait for the next one.

An extremely well written book.

I had a lovely time listening to this audiobook. At first I thought the book was too fast-paced but as I continued with the audio I could tell it was not as I had thought.

Keeps you entertained and excited to see how strong the main character gets.

Highly recommend.

I really wanted to enjoy this book

(may contain mild spoilers)This book ostensibly has everything I would put in to a story, a connection between science and magic, a main character with vast powers, growth of said powers and a mutiverse of potential adventuring even through death and time. but despite all that I found my self zoning out regularly while trying to listen. I don't think it's the narration as the performance is very good but I listen to a LOT of audio books and some will grab you where as this I found myself going back over whole chapters because I'd lost track and really wanted to enjoy it based on the premise alone.

I think the problem is that the technical detail which is all important and can very much enhance a story either wasn't succinct enough or wasn't woven in to the story in a way that you became aware of what you needed to know without conveying it like an npc who has masses of written dialogue to explain part of the game you need to know but would be better learning in smaller segments in between more doing and interacting i.e - the fun stuff.

it's got potential though and as it's the first installment I'll read the next to see how the writer grows with the story as they develop it.

Loved every second of it

A very OP hero for an epic story about AI's. Plausible universe, real struggles, funny
