About this listen
Discover the first medieval adventure in the action-packed Chivalry series! Perfect for fans of Bernard Cornwell, Simon Scarrow and Conn Iggulden.
September, 1356. Poitiers.
The greatest knights of the age were ready to give battle.
On the English side, Edward, the Black Prince, who'd earned his spurs at Crecy.
On the French side, the king and his son, the dauphin. With 12,000 knights.
And then there is William Gold. A cook's boy - the lowest of the low - who had once been branded as a thief. William dreams of being a knight, but in this savage new world of intrigue, betrayal and greed, first he must learn to survive.
As rapacious English mercenaries plunder a country already ravaged by plague, and the peasantry take violent revenge against the French knights who have failed to protect them, is chivalry any more than a boyish fantasy?

Fabulous novel

The characters in general are believable and well presented and their interactions are complex enough to keep the listener spellbound without being too confused. I am eagerly downloading the next in the series as I write this.

That said if I'd listened to these first I might have had a different opinion.
This is a tale set amidst the growth of the Free Companies that came into existence throughout Western Europe during the mid 14th century just after the battle of Poitiers in 1356. IMK is full of CC's insights into human nature and done in CC's familiar style of a memoir of the hero. He portrays the times as a more brutal age than the ancient Greeks and full of the contradictions that exist between a corrupt Christian culture and the ignorance of real people in real life.
The fact is that the hero at this stage is a youth of his times struggling to come to terms with these contradictions and the necessity to make his way in the world guided by the norms of his society at that time. Quite frankly there are few characters to really like and count as hero's, excerpt perhaps M'lady, but no doubt we will see the growth and development of the central character as we did with Arimnestos of Platea.
The narrator is sadly no longer with us, and he falls short of PN's high standards. That said, he is tolerable and had I listened to him before hearing PN I may have given him 4 stars instead of 3. Before I googled him I picked out the South African twang in his accent and it was this that made me curious.
If you're a youngster, war gamer or into military and political history of all times along with a desire to learn about humanity, leadership, relationships, husbandry and all sorts of practical things, or just some one who likes a good yarn, then this is worth the fee no doubt. Mick the Hick😊
