Summary

Once, her heart was empty. Now it's filled with ice....

Ellen's therapist told her to forget the past, but the life she’s left with is boring. All she wants is to be happy and normal, but the approaching long, bleak nights of winter loom heavy before her, especially as she'll be alone.

But when the secrets her mother put in place to protect her are exposed, Ellen learns the frightening truth. Her history is darker than she imagined. She's not who she thinks she is, and the real her is a very different person to the one whom others have mistreated and exploited.

If there's hope of a future, Ellen must find answers about the past, and the new Ellen is less forgiving. This winter, there will be more than just discontent, and DI Barton will struggle in his hardest case to date.

How can he find the truth when all the victims and witnesses are dead?

Ross Greenwood writes gritty, heart-pounding thrillers, with twists aplenty and unforgettable endings. Perfect for fans of Mark Billingham and Stuart MacBride.

First time for everything

This is the first time I have listened to this author and narrator. The story was strange to start with but you soon got use to listening to the person in the story. It was very well written giving another angle.
The narrator was a bit annoying at times but you soon learn to to tune out the way he spoke and listen to what he was saying.

Another great twist in the tale!

Really enjoying the D.I Barton series, this one has probably been my favourite so far despite the harrowing story that plays out. Starting on the next one immediately!!

A great thriller

A slow burner that takes a little while to get going but is worth waiting for. The start was a little confusing since the main female character, whose voice is written in the first person, is read by a male narrator which didn't seem right. Eventually, I did get used to it and it became less confusing as the story progressed.
The author, Ross Greenwood, has a clever way of luring in the reader just as others, including the police, are also lured in by the murderer. It even had me questioning how bad the murderer actually was at times!

A really good listen ….

I enjoyed this book - the narration was good and I binged chapters as often as I could! The story at times seemed a bit far fetched - but it certainly engaged me and I would recommend reading/listening to it!
