About this listen

Christopher Argent lives in the shadows as the empire's most elite assassin. Emotion is something he tossed away years ago, making him one of the most clear-eyed, coldhearted, wealthiest, and therefore untouchable men in London.

But when his latest target turns out to be London's own darling, Millicent LeCour, Christopher's whole world is turned upside down. Overwhelmed by her stunning combination of seduction and innocence, Christopher cannot complete the mission. She has made him feel again. Now he will do anything to save her life, so he can claim her as his own....

When Millie learns what Christopher was hired to do, she is torn between the fear in her heart and the fire in her soul. Putting herself in this notorious hunter's arms may be her only path to safety - even if doing so could be the deadliest mistake she's ever made. But how can she resist him? As the heat between her and Christopher burns out of control, danger lurks in the shadows. Is their desire worth the risk? Only the enemy knows what fate has in store....

I was so looking forward to listening to this book, following on from The Highwayman which was awesome that it interesting that I found it hard to get into initially, but I am so pleased that I persevered.

Wow! What a story and the chemistry between Millicent and Christopher was almost too hot to handle, especially for one filled with so much ice!

I had to immediately listen to the beginning again as the ending was just incredible.

Thank you Kerrigan for another wonderful book and Derek for an exceptional narration. I can't wait to move onto book 3!

Highly recommended!

Kerrigan Byrne’s stories are expertly crafted, the twists and turns, the mystery, the deep emotion, the fates of the engaging characters….and the romance. The experience of hearing Derek Perkins’ wonderful voice reading the vehicle by which you are transported into 13 hours of bliss, is so good, it’s unbelievable. I’m always left stunned and completely sated after a Kerrigan Byrne story. The hero of the story and the heroine, both, are immaculately crafted and engaging and loveable despite any horrors they face around and inside themselves. The side characters are wonderful and the dear little boy! It’s almost more than one heart can bear. The romantic steam is heartstoppingly perfect!!! Thank the stars that Kerrigan Byrne is such a prolific writer because I don’t think I can survive without one of her books on the go at all times.

Enchanting from the first word to the last!

…has his frozen heart thawed. I couldn’t stop listening to this one. Derek Perkins is fantastic, as always. Watching the hero’s emotions crack through is heartwarming.

I’m deducting a star, as I have for others in the series, because while one character has undergone dramatic character growth, the other hasn’t changed. That’s not a critique I make for the sake of it — it would really add something to have both change over time.

Having said that, this book is great. There are twists and turns, action, and the steamy scenes contribute to the story. Highly recommend

The most tortured hero

If you loved The Highwayman, this one hits just as hard — and in some ways, even better.

What absolutely gripped me was Christopher Argent himself. Unlike Dorian, who spends half the book refusing to touch Farah, Argent has far less sexual restraint — and thank God for it. He manages to combine desire with morality in a way that feels balanced instead of frustrating. No endless martyr act, no “I want you but I refuse you.” He wants Millie, he acts on it, and it works beautifully.

And the plot? Exactly the dynamic I’ve always wanted: an assassin who becomes the protector of the woman he was supposed to kill. Argent and Millie are both layered, tortured characters with real histories, real scars, and real emotional arcs. It never feels shallow or rushed. Their chemistry is electric and their pain makes sense.

What surprised me most is how Argent’s raw masculinity blends with genuine yearning. There were moments where I actually preferred The Hunter to The Highwayman — which I never expected, because I love Dorian and Farah. But Christopher and Millie carved out their own space in my heart.

And finally… Derek Perkins is perfection. His narration elevates everything. He gives Argent the exact mix of danger and vulnerability the character needed. I wouldn’t want anyone else voicing these men.

Absolutely a 5-star read for me.
