Vincent Ruiz is lucky to be alive. A bullet in the leg, another through the hand, he is discovered clinging to a buoy in the River Thames, losing blood and consciousness fast. It takes six days for him to come out of his coma and, when he does, his nightmare is only just beginning. Because Vincent has no recollection of what happened and nobody believes him.

A mile away from his body, a boat was found covered in blood... Vincent's and that of three others. Forensics say at least one of them must be dead. Vincent, a police detective, had signed his service pistol out of the station armoury, despite being on leave. Many murder suspects fake amnesia and the investigating team are not sure this case is any different. The only clue is a picture in his pocket, a photograph of a young girl, Mickey Carlyle, who disappeared three years ago. And though Mickey is presumed dead, Vincent has the nagging doubt that she is alive and in terrible danger.

Although this book was narrated by the best story-teller I have ever come across in Audible, the novel for me just did not stand out. The plot itself was quite clever but it wasn't character driven enough for me. I felt a lack of fully, realistically drawn personalities, which meant that I didn't really care what happened to them. This, as all reviews is subjective, so the book may well appeal to other readers.

this was a very good story with London as a backdrop. the main character has a tortured past which drives his sense of justice well.

I loved the first book "The suspect" about the clinical psychologist Joe O'Loughlin and the homicide detective Vincent Ruiz. I don't think this book "The drowning man" was as good as "The suspect". It lacked excitement. Quite boring. I was quite disappointed. My disappointment is problaby because I prefer behavioral psychology to regular police investigation. And in this second book about the psychologist and the detective, it's the detective Ruiz that is the main character while we hardy hear anything about my favorite character dr O'Loughlin.

Not very exciting, this one.
