I got addicted to Elizabeth O’Roark’s writing with her Parallel series, and with THE DEVIL YOU KNOW she once again showed me why. Gemma and Ben’s love story was the perfect blend of what I love and hate in an enemies to lovers romance: Amazing, hilarious banter and sizzling chemistry I could not get enough of, paired with a slow burn feel … and one of the characters always seemingly being close to run. Seriously, Gemma gave me anxiety at times! Thankfully, she was written in a way that helped me understand why she acted the way she did, which lessened my annoyance towards her tremendously. Oh, and Ben … he’s delicious. Relentless and even sweet in his pursue of Gemma, slightly dominant, and just plain swoon-worthy. An amazing office romance with a touch of forced proximity and a truly wonderful couple, brought to life and enhanced by Samantha Brentmoor who did a terrific job.

It might be the fact that I have my own Ben at home, but I was SUPER receptive to Ben Tate’s charm, even if it was kind of hard to see from the perspective of someone like Gemma.
I’ll be honest, I wanted to give her a good shake at the way her brain was processing some of this, even if I did understand. EOR definitely got me to see through the eyes of someone who wanted that Hallmark romance, but approached everything with a very generous side of cynicism.
I have loved this series, every single listen has blown me away, kept me hooked, and this was no different.

This is a fantastic ‘enemies to lovers’ office romance, and I loved everything about it, from Elizabeth O’Roark’s wonderful writing style to the fabulous characters and storylines she created to the perfectly cast narrator who brings it all to life from the pages to your ears. The story grabbed my attention right from the start and captivated it the entire book. The characters are realistic, easy to relate to and connect with, they were easy to care about too. Gemma Charles is an attorney working in a man’s world, she learned that valuable lesson at her previous job after getting burned. She also knows she has to world hard to prove herself and not show any weakness. She has put in her dues, made a name for herself and is hoping to make partner in the firm she is working for. Then she gets assigned to work with her rival, Ben Tate, the one who stole her clients and also has made a name for himself. He is a looker and knows it, he also knows how to get under her skin. But nothing is going to get in her way of making partner, not even Ben Tate. The chemistry between these two is absolutely electric and the banter, OMG, wow, lawyers have a gift with words and O’Roark does too. I adored both characters for different reasons, Gemma, too jaded for her own good, but she had a good heart hidden under the bitterness she was holding on to. Ben Tate, swoon worthy and yes, I doubted him and questioned his motives at times, but you be the judge of that when you read or listen to this book, which is a real treat in so many ways. This wonderfully plotted has the perfect balance of drama, both office and relationship, a touch of angst and humor, heartfelt emotions and a steamy hot romance. Elizabeth O’Roark, thank you for this fabulous story and emotional rollercoaster ride.

🎧📚🎧 And for the wonderful narration, Samantha Brentmoor is a superbly talented narrator and a versatile voice artist, and she does a great job covering the roles of all the characters, giving each their own distinct voice and personalty, making it easy to follow along and tell who is who. She has a complete understanding of the characters she portrays, takes each role, runs with it while making it her own, sounding believable and just as I picture the character would sound. She set the perfect tone for the story, captures all the characters’ emotions and projects them into her performance and has you feeling every single one. Brentmoor is an entertaining storyteller and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for another great listen.

(audiobook) I have mixed feelings. I loved this book a whole lot, until the very end. Warning, it’ll get a bit spoilery near the end, but I can’t explain my feelings without those little spoilers.

First of all, it was a good enemies to lovers story. Sure, it begins with a lot of lust and some angry-ish sexy times, but quickly Gemma and Ben more than tolerate each other as they start working together. They open up and share some personal details. Gemma sees another side of Ben and maybe admires him in the end.

We don’t really know about Ben’s feelings–at first–as the story is seen almost exclusively through Gemma’s eyes. But clearly learning more about Ben’s past and mind forces her to re-evaluate the way she sees him, and she realizes there were some misunderstanding.

Despite all her prejudices–somewhat legitimate, as they come from past experiences–Gemma was a great character. She’s dedicated, has a good heart, and wants to change the office’s ways. It was terribly frustrating to see how her bosses kept interfering. Her journey wasn’t an easy one.

At least she had Ben to help her. Early on, it becomes clear that Ben is basically the opposite of what she thought. He has her best interests at heart, though he has to hide it. Until the end, I thought he was great. I especially enjoyed the way he lost control when he was with Gemma, how she unravelled him. How he wasn’t afraid to show his softer belly, while still being a real alpha male.

But–here are the spoilers–it’s revealed in the end that Ben has serious stalker tendancies, and it made me cringe hard. Some of his actions were definitely cute, but others would put him in a ward in my opinion. Obsession isn’t a sexy trait. It kind of ruined the character for me. And it made me sad because I really enjoyed him until then! And the cringiest element wasn’t even necessary. I suppose the author thought it would be funny.

There was a strong feminist message that I loved, all through the book. Between fighting privileges and misogyny at her workplace, and helping women in family court trials, Gemma sure has a lot to say about women’s place in the world. But as you’ll see, she also knows that individually, people can be good or bad, no matter their gender.

What makes me give this book a good grade nonetheless is the narration. The narrator was absolute perfection! She made me shiver, she made me–almost–cry. She does an excellent job. And the special appearance from one of my favorite male narrators for a little taste at Ben’s mind made it even better.
