Summary

A chance encounter with a tabloid playboy lands a scrappy waif a place in high society.

Fainting in the notorious nobleman’s arms is the smartest move the self-proclaimed spazz ever made. Now her picture decorates every gossip rag in Britain, and the public wants to know who the Devil Duke’s new squeeze is.

Offered a sizable sum, Izzy De Luca travels to England where she will pose as the Duke of Devoy’s new bride. It seems the rake’s reputation needs some rehabilitation, and the fresh-faced orphan is just the girl to brighten his tarnished image.

Izzy enters a lavish world of wealth and privilege, but soon realizes her uptight employer is no laid-back lady charmer. Sparks fly between the two when the spirited American lets the impossibly handsome blue blood know she won’t be gentrified without a fight.

As they play out the carefully constructed charade, the jaded Duke finds himself drawn to Izzy’s rare brand of charm, and what begins as a collision of worlds ends in a union of love.

This may be a modern day Cinderella story, but this feisty commoner is no simpering sweetheart. She means to give our titled hero a run for his millions.

Hilarious & Very Enjoyable

I love this audiobook; it's quirky, playful and thoroughly entertaining, with many laugh-aloud moments. The storyline is engaging, a rendition of a modern fairy-tale, where a commoner finds love with a charming royalty. It began with a chance encounter between, Izzy, a department store clerk and Trevor, the Devil Duke of Devoy. Trevor is on a mission to change his playboy ways and becoming a country gentleman. He has a plan, a pretended marriage. He'll get the media off his back, repair his reputation, while allowing him to direct his attention to fatherhood. It all sounds great in theory, but some things are easier said than done. What wasn't considered is Izzy herself, the much younger fake bride. Like a ball of hyper-energy, Izzy bounces into Trevor's life, turning it inside out with her adorable ways. Before Trevor realizes, Izzy has warmed her itsy-bitsy self into his heart. In addition to a well-composed story, Tessa Bowen has done an exceptional job with character developments. Izzy and Trevor are the polar opposites with charged chemistry, pulsating to erupt. She is very petite, spunky, and lively. He on the other is, the classic playboy bachelor, tall, elegant, seductive, extravagant, and notably handsome. Together, they are fascinating and hilarious, their back and forth banter will keep you smiling throughout the book. The narration by Virginia Ferguson is outstanding, she really channelled the characters and their personality quirks. I wholly enjoyed her performance. Overall, this is a fun and very enjoyable audiobook and highly recommend it.

Quirky , funny modern day Cinderella

I really enjoyed this book. Lots of lol moments and swoony that Izzy a store clerk finds herself a Duke. Trevor needed Izzy to calm down his reputation but she may be more than he bargained for. I’m really excited that it’s a series and I get to hear more about these fun characters. Virginia is new to me. I enjoyed her performance and found it easy to follow along with her and could easily distinguish between them. At times I felt I could hear her swallow and found it strange. Really fun, easy going story that pulled my heart strings.

Not My Cup-O

This book had a decent story line. I did finish but it was hard to finish. This book would be amazing to play one of those drinking games while listening. Every time she calls him a "Weirdo Pervert"..... SHOT. However if you value your liver, I may suggest soda vs. liquor cause she calls him that all the bloody time.

certain phrasing should not be used

i have mixed feelings about this book. The story plot was ok with plenty of laugh out moments, but the reason for my low star rating is i found it offending at times. The way Izzy spoke using variations of the word spazz and pervert. It made it hard to listen too at times struggled to finish.

hilarious

What a hilarious book, Isobel's sassy take no prisoners attitude was just brilliant, and had me laughing out loud as she drove her duke to distraction, and Virginia Ferguson's voice really brought the book to life..

My Thoughts on The Devil Duke

Right from the beginning this story started off interesting. The leading lady was lively and interesting. She was spunky and I loved how she gave the Duke a run for his money. The Duke had one of those personalities that as was off putting but in that way where you're just waiting to see the good side of him. You know it's in him, you know just have to wait. But as I waited I got this highly entertaining story that was funny and so well told by narrator Virginia Ferguson. Her British accent seemed really well suited for the story. It seemed like the perfect fit. I think the only thing that occasionally threw me was that sometimes I think the accent slipped a bit when she was switching between the third person pov and voicing Izzy's American voice. But it wasn't anything that could make you dislike her narration at all. I definitely liked her. Overall this was a good introduction to this author for me and I look forward to more books by her.

Let this Duke story grab you

Book 1 in the series. Its a Royal story but in modern times , a modern fairytale, where a commoner finds her prince . Tessa throws in a few twists and turns and a story with true love , even though the Hero and Heroine didn’t know they were meant to be together Hero is Trevor. Heroine is Izzy . You know it’s true love when Izzy turns Trevor’s life around . Trevor was just roaming in life with no purpose until he meets Izzy . Trevor was a ladies man always changing Ladies. He got bored with them . Trevor and Izzy became the Darlings of Britain and Izzy in the spotlight when she fainted and Trevor the Duke saved her . Trevor asked her to change his reputation . First his image with the ladies , he’s Divorced with a child . Virginia performance was good. Her British accent was perfect for the story . Virginia voice and accent was strong and smooth

Steamy

I really enjoyed this book. This was the first time I had listened to a romance novel and I was pleasantly surprised. The story reminded me of My Fair Lady in that a commoner is taken in by the aristocracy and made over to become a Duchess. I really enjoyed the characters though there were times when Izzy’s voice was a bit much. As the book went on I feel like her voice was toned down a bit and it was much more pleasant to listen to. The only negative was that there were a few times that I would have liked Izzy to stick up for herself a bit earlier than she did, but at least she did stick up for herself. While the story itself is one that is often told, (rich playboy meets common girl, falls in love, etc.) this version felt fresh and new and also added the element of the playboy having a young daughter. It added additional complexity to the story and more opportunities for humor and character development and discovery. It was a great story and one that I will likely listen to again. It is also the first in a series and I have already started on the next one! I was provided with a free copy of this audiobook for my honest review. The views expressed here are entirely my own.

Fabulous!

The Devil Duke is the name given to an English gentleman who is notorious for the number of women he dates. He can't go anywhere, not even to America, without the paparazzi following him. They get a picture of him just as a cute little urchin trips and falls into his arms. Not a good look when it hits the front page of a tabloid. Izzy De Luca is the woman in his arms and a story to explain this to the British people is hatched. She will be paid a hefty sum to act as his new bride with hopes of rehabilitating his image. She finally relents, but is not overly happy to try to fit into the world of wealth and privilege, when she grew up as an orphan. She surprises the Duke with her quirky behavior, attitude and language. When she uses street language and particularly odd phrases, it sends him out of his mind. I had to laugh that she purposely goaded him with her light-hearted, unstuffy behavior. His daughter, Charlotte, comes alive with Izzy. For the first time in a long time, she laughs with joy and they have imaginative fun with each other. It is a sweet and hysterical story of turning lives on end and upsetting the norm. As with most fairytales, there must be a horrid stepmother-like figure. Trevor's past is filled with women and one in particular has always been there. Abigail isn't going to give up without a fight because he is supposed to be hers and she will find a way to break them up. Trevor comes to realize that Izzy is changing his life in more ways than one and he wants her to be with him always. He's going to have to change from a devil duke into a monogamous man if he intends to capture Izzy's heart. Izzy makes him earn a happy ending and she made me smile with the stipulations she set forth. An endearing story! Virginia Ferguson is one of my favorite narrators and she did a great job with this story. Her British accent fits all her characters and the voices she uses for each are admirable. So often, a narrator can add extra enjoyment to an e-book and this is one!

I could listen to this one again and again! Loved It!

I love, Love, LOVED this story! It’s so much more than a stuffy British story. This is the story of a light hearted free spirit..a fairy..if you will. Everyone who meets her is enchanted. She is looked upon with favor when she meets a man dropped from the heavens. Little does she know he might look delicious but his attitude needs adjustment. Izzy is a delight to read! She makes me smile just reading about her. The way she portrays herself and doesn’t hold back is inspiring. Izzy is the star of this book. Trevor is her counterpart. He is stiff, formal and wildly attractive. He needs a proper wife to dispel rumors of his womanizing ways. I loved that he couldn’t figure out why every liked Izzy so much. She was like a puzzle to him. I enjoyed Travis as well but Izzy easily out ranked him. I could listen to this one again and again! It made me laugh and shake my head. These two together (Izzy and Travis) are such a joy to read. The Epilogue is one of my favorite chapters. I could really see the changes and the fun that they have between them. Insert *Smile* here. I did listen to this on audio. Virginia Ferguson did an outstanding job. Very pleasant on my ears and listening to the two different accents was great. I liked her “fake” British accent that Izzy did. Ha Ha!

Not really my type of story, but it was interesting. Narrator sounded like an actual child for the main female character.

Not for me

Something about the voices really irked me. The heroine had a Fran Drescher sound and honestly she annoyed me so much I had to turn it off. I gave it three tries but just no. The Duke wasn't much better. And then there was the heroine's language. The Duke calls her vulgar and it's correct. I got tired of hearing the words crap and fr*gging so many times. So many. I could have overlooked that I guess but she was such a whiny brat I couldn't find her relatable. I gave up. Might be better in digital or for someone else, but I just couldn't enjoy it.

holy frekin crap!

I loved this read / listen! So much fun - this listen had me laughing out loud with these main character antics. Isabelle is now one of my favorite people - her sassy wit and ability to let things go amaze me and I love that she won't change who she is for anyone or anything! I think I fell a little in lust with this devil duke too! A handsome rake who gets charmed by the most unlikely of sorts! Great storyline and I loved the flow - never got bored. The narrator did a great job on this as well! I may just have to listen to this one again and again - I enjoyed it so much! This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review!
