Summary

In 2020 the United Kingdom reached a bewildering milestone: ten successive years of Conservative rule. In that decade there were three prime ministers, each in turn described as the worst leader we ever had; ministerial resignations by the hundred; and an unrelenting stream of ineffectual, divisive bum-slurry oozing from 10 Downing Street.

The Decade in Tory is an inglorious, rollicking and entirely true account of ten years of demonstrable lies, relentless incompetence, epic waste, serial corruption, official police investigations, anti-democratic practices, abuse of power, dereliction of duty and hundreds of thousands of avoidable deaths.

With his signature scathing wit, Russell Jones breaks down the government's interminable failures year by year, covering everything from David Cameron's pledge to tackle inequality—which reduced UK life expectancy for the first time since 1841—through the bewildering storm of lies and betrayals that led to Brexit, devastating education cuts, serial mismanagement of the NHS and Boris Johnson's calamitous response to the COVID-19 pandemic. It will leave you gasping and wondering: can things possibly get any worse?

The truth about government lies and corruption

This book needs to be compulsory reading or listening to every person and schoolchild from the age of 14, to realise what this government has done to democracy and governance in this country. It is essential reading.
Over the past 13 years, the conservative government in the UK has faced significant criticism for their management of the country. Many argue that their time in power has been characterized by a series of disappointments, marked by lies and corruption. The government has been accused of misleading the public with false promises and flawed policies. Additionally, various scandals have emerged, highlighting allegations of corruption within the conservative party. These issues have led to a lack of trust and faith in the government's ability to effectively govern and address the needs of the country.
This book should be a reference book of mismanagement and corruption.

Glad I’m not a British taxpayer…

An absolute superb recollection of the last decade or so of the Conservatives in power. How any British taxpayer/voter could listen to this without repeatedly hurling their phone against the wall in a blind rage is beyond me. The level of incompetence and corruption just beggars belief.

Depressingly accurate.

This book confirmed my absolute hatred of The Tory Party & those who have led this country into an entirely avoidable mess.
Russ Jones should be considered a national treasure for keeping track of most of the lies, corruption & sexual misconduct of those who consider themselves our masters.

Facts are scarier than fiction

loved this punchy straightforward summary, but had to stop listening on car journeys due to the anger it induced as well as the giggling at descriptions worthy of entering the Oxford dictionary. I credibly quite worthy I shall buy a hard copy to highlight the bits we should never ever forget when we are considering our votes, or being sold a policy. mostly it's a super accessible political book for the average person. Well read , well written

Sheer ignorance (of performer)

Loved the book. But would recommend finding a reader that knows some big words, seeing as the book includes some.

Instead of being solely annoyed with Tory excesses, I was equally disappointed with the reader, who butchered words throughout.

If you don’t know the word, ask!

A meticulous look at how not to run a country

Russ Jones had to have a several month long rest from his This Week in Tory tweets and having listened to this I’m not surprised. To be honest I would understand if he refused to ever leave his house again, but hopefully he will and hopefully he will keep chronicling the unhinged goings on of our political leaders. This is a brilliant book. It isn’t a good book, as such, because it covers ten of the most ridiculous years you would ever want to live through, but it is an important story to have told. If someone tried to write this as fiction they would be told that the satire was too much, no one would buy some of the things that happened. But they did, and the UK is breaking because it did, and it continues.

A great listen

I enjoyed this book immensely, if "enjoyed" is the right word for the meticulous account of how the Tory governments have stripped and plundered this country in the ten years from 2010-2020. I just wish the narrator would learn to correctly pronounce "intransigence" and "chutzpah".

Everyone should read/listen to this book before casting their vote

What a listen! I know the Tories are corrupt and inept but had forgotten the depths and period of time over which they have wrought misery on the people of Great Britain for their own benefit and that of their donors. One clear message for me is never vote Tory.
