About this listen

The beloved classic daily devotional of Stoic meditations—the only authorized print edition in the US and complete with a ribbon marker—with more than two million copies sold!

Why have history's greatest minds—from George Washington to Frederick the Great to Ralph Waldo Emerson, along with today's top performers from Super Bowl-winning football coaches to CEOs and celebrities—embraced the wisdom of the ancient Stoics? Because they realize that the most valuable wisdom is timeless and that philosophy is for living a better life, not a classroom exercise.

The Daily Stoic offers 366 days of Stoic insights and exercises, featuring all-new translations from the Emperor Marcus Aurelius, the playwright Seneca, or slave-turned-philosopher Epictetus, as well as lesser-known luminaries like Zeno, Cleanthes, and Musonius Rufus. Every day of the year you'll find one of their pithy, powerful quotations, as well as historical anecdotes, provocative commentary, and a helpful glossary of Greek terms.

By following these teachings over the course of a year (and, indeed, for years to come) you'll find the serenity, self-knowledge, and resilience you need to live well.

An enlighting book that brings stoic philosophy into the present day. This is an excellent listen and I highly recommend. Also check out Ryan's other books 'Obstacle is the Way' and 'Ego is the Enemy'.

I am now a fan of stoicism

The content is fantastic. Ryan has the ability to take what he's researched and make it relevant for everyone, everywhere at every time. This really is a fantastic collection of reflections and inspirations, which do justice to his other, excellent works.

The audiobook really could do with being re-recorded, however. The reader tries to add some theatrical flair to the quoted parts of the work, yet he succeeds in making the words of the stoics themselves sound corny and hammy in equal measure. It actually actually caused me to cringe in parts. Just read the words, for goodness sake and don't turn this into the literary equivalent of William Shatner performing "Rocket Man".

Even despite this, it's an exceptional work.

This book is a superb entrance to the world of Stoicism. Meant to be read one chapter per day during an entire year, it's also a pleasurable read in one go. Really interesting summary of the key teachings of the Stoic philosophers for our daily lives

An excellent introduction to Stoicism
