Summary
Broken by his last case, homicide detective Joe Cashin has fled the city and returned to his hometown to run its one-man police station while his wounds heal and the nightmares fade.
He lives a quiet life with his two dogs in the tumbledown wreck his family home has become. It's a peaceful existence - ideal for the rehabilitating man. But his recovery is rudely interrupted by a brutal attack on Charles Bourgoyne, a prominent member of the local community. Suspicion falls on three young men from the local Aboriginal community.
But Cashin's not so sure, and as the case unfolds amid simmering corruption and prejudice, he finds himself holding on to something that it might be better to let go...

Engaging story. Would read more. Recommended
Good story - not all my questions are answered. Narration is a bit laid back and lacking emotion but overall very enjoyable.

A Raw, Pacey and Brilliantly Crafted Thriller
It's no wonder at all that Peter Temple is an award winning author who is held in increasingly high regard.. I did some research before I bought this 'Aussie' thriller and it really paid dividends. Have to admit that when it first started off I didn't think I'd get to grips with the clipped and pacey style of the narrator or the author but before long I was completely won over by this compelling combination. What can also be initially 'challenging' is the raw nature of the Aussie outback dialogue but I guarantee that this novel will give you as many laughs as it does thrills. This author doesn't hesitate in taking on a whole raft of issues including race, politics, corruption, abuse and murder and he does it superbly well. You definitely won't find yourself needing to suspend belief in either the plot or the characters. Clever,.clever Peter Temple. His heady mix of short, sharp chapters, vivid and wholly believable characters and almost cinematic dialogue all render this novel a truly unique and hugely enjoyable experience.

Difficult to follow
Sadly I did not enjoy this! The story seemed to ramp up a bit more towards the end, but found it all a nut hard to follow.
