About this listen

When his brother dies stepping out in front of a car, Detective Jack Laidlaw is determined to find out what really happened.

With corrosive wit, Laidlaw relates an emotional quest through Glasgow's underworld, and into the past. He discovers as much about himself as the loved brother he has lost in a search that leads to a shattering climax.

I only discovered William McIlvanney when he had already died. All the Laidlaw books are stunningly well written and the mixture of crime drama and philosophy unique. I definitely recommend you read or listen to them all.

A masterpiece

Such an elegant, clever and witty writer. Not afraid of the darkness within everyone or delving deeply into the Scottish psyche, especially from the west coast. A lesson in great writing. Great audio by Mark Bonnar.

Insightful beautiful writing .Not to be missed

William McIlvanney is a wonderful writer, he presents a masterclass in descriptive writing once again, enhanced by an excellent narrator. Read all three of his Laidlaw books and would recommend without hesitation.

An original telling of a familiar story. The hard but poetic darkness of Laidlaw perfectly complimented by Mark Bonnar’s narration. And no distracting voices and accents hooray!

Pacy and dark - expertly told by Mark Bonnar

Mark Bonnar was a fantastic choice to narrate this. I loved the book. It evoked the city of Glasgow in the 1990s. Characters were all realistic.

Mark Bonnar’s narration - top class.
