On October 6, 1973, Ted Simon knew there was no going back. He loaded up his 500cc Triumph Tiger in the pouring rain and said good-bye to London. Over four years he rode 64,000 miles round the world. Breakdowns, revolutions, war, a spell in prison, and a Californian commune were all part of his experience, which was colored variously by utter despair and unimaginable joy. Story
Clare Balding grew up in a rather unusual household. As her father is a champion trainer, she shared her life with more than 100 thoroughbred racehorses, mares, foals, and ponies, as well as an ever-present pack of boxers and lurchers. As a toddler she would happily ride the legendary Mill Reef and take breakfast with the Queen. She and her younger brother came very low down the pecking order. Left to their own devices, they had to learn life’s toughest lessons through the animals, and through their adventures in the stables.

That series, Ramblings, is still going strong - and Clare's caught the walking bug. Now she wants her family to share some of that pleasure. Her and her brother Andrew are determined to conquer the Wayfarer's Walk, a 71-mile route. What could possibly go wrong?

Summary
In 2007, Roz Savage set out to row 8,000 miles across the Pacific Ocean—alone. Despite having successfully rowed across the Atlantic the previous year, the Pacific presented the former office worker with unprecedented challenges and overpowering currents—both in the water and within herself.
Crossing Earth’s largest ocean alone might seem a long way removed from everyday life, yet the lessons Roz learned about the inner journey, the ocean, and the world are relevant to all of us. She shares tales of the ups and downs of her voyage across the waves, while offering insights on how to find happiness through a meaningful and rewarding life.

Too long, too worthy, and inadequately narrated
I wanted to like this a lot. I didn’t.
I could not identify with Roz from the outset, I could not empathise with her need to declutter, and in particular I could not appreciate her first act; that of getting rid of her husband. Now it may be that she wished to retain a certain degree of privacy and she chose not to present the full story, but she stands judged on what she has written, not upon speculation.
This is a shame, a real shame because in between all of the padding, all of the pithy philosophy, she does have a message that is worth listening too. She just takes too long to say it, and the delivery is less than perfect.
The producers should have re-record the sections where the stress, intonation and pauses of this self-narrated audiobook interfered with relaxed listening.

A very well narrated reading of Roz's incredible tale. Her very honest and humble recounting of the journey almost makes rowing solo across the Pacific sound easy! A highly recommended listen for anyone interested in Adventure / Environmentalism.

Super inspirational
After being widowed I have been working hard to reinvent myself. Even as a very positive person, sometimes I've felt that I just can't do this on my own. Roz's Book has given me renewed strength and optimism that I can indeed build a wonderful life and achieve anything I want. Her story of overcoming obstacles will stay with me for a very long time. It has also renewed my determination to do everything I can to help the environment.

I only listened to 1/3, so maybe it gets better?
Narration is OK. I've heard some god awful narration so i couldn't put it in the 1 or 2 stars with that category of "unlistenable". Still, the narration was just ok.
Story really belongs in a much shorter book. I'm sure the story is actually very very good - but she draws it out with detailed accounts of things that we just don't care about hearing. There's a constant refrain about how she likes to eat clean & is forced to eat things she doesn't want to eat. It's exhausting to listen to mundane comments about how you don't like a certain type of food. I feel like I'm at my friend's house & her 5 year old is protesting that night's dinner.
Seriously, I have to believe this story gets better - but I can't make it through a minute longer.

Riveting!
What does Roz Savage bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
I love that the author read the book, and through her expression I was able to almost feel as if I were sitting next to her. Great voice and inflection for narration.
Any additional comments?
This was an excellent story of not only adventure but also one of how resilient people are. Roz experienced extreme situations and she describes how they made her feel but also why she did what she did and how it made her stronger. The book was well written and well narrated. I was just enthralled. I thank Roz for making my drive to and from work something to look forward to! I highly recommend this book.

Positively Courageous Inspiration
Unfulfilled in a materialistic lifestyle and an unsatisfying marriage, Roz shook up her life.
She extracted herself from both and went in search of her purpose. Selling all her belongings, she went on a mental sabbatical, studying mystical, philosophical and metaphysical traditions. She read about the Hopi Tribe "Prophecies and their belief that these are now coming true in The Hopi Survival Kit. The Predictions consist Of a Sequence of signs that the end of civilization is approaching, and a new era is coming. The first sign is "gourd of ashes" falling from the sky. The Hopi interpreted this occurring when the Bomb fell on Hiroshima. Since then, they have regularly sent a delegation to the United Nations to issue a call to action . According to their philosophy, we have to look after the earth if we want it to look after us. If we lose touch with our spirituality and forget that we are dependent for our survival, things are not going to go well. The people who know where to find their own food and water" will survive best. (introduction "Dream big change your life")
Realizing a fundamental truth in her being, She decided to row the oceans solitary to bring awareness to the earth and the damage we are doing to the environment .
She learned much more about herself and life. Roz tried to figure out lessons being taught by the ocean obstacle. She realized the ocean is just what it is not a sentient being. Learning about adversity overcoming obstacles by how you respond to adversity are positives in the hardship that makes it meaningful With opportunity for growth and learning . Pg 69
One obstacle involved broken water makers. Roz had a computer on board which she connected to satellite to post a blog. One post concerned the Junk ship launched from CA with destination Hawaii, it's mission to study trash from land and it's cumulative effect stalling out in the Great Pacific Garbage patch. Roz managed an ocean meet-up with guys sailing he ship made from plastic bottles and other trash, celebrated with them with a fish fry and was awarded a share in their water to get her the rest of the way in their common destination. Serendipity on the high seas seems to be a major theme in the narrative. She had many of these types of encounters and other events for better or worse.
I chose the book, because I was intrigued with the idea of one woman and one boat crossing the great expanses of water between continents. There is much controversy in academia about how the first people's migrated to the Americas. The prevalent theory is the Beringia Land Bridge access. Other researchers have a preponderance of evidence for also a water landing perhaps as early as 40000 years ago . If one woman rowing a boat albeit one loaded with modern technology such as GPS, weather monitoring by satellite phone, surely skilled Ancient mariners could have . No Problem!
I learned much more though and left the book with great admiration and understanding for Roz Savage for her dream of purpose and a kindred spirit regarding Native American Wisdom and a purposeful life!
I will check out her book about crossing the Atlantic.
