About this listen

It's never too late to fall in love in this enchanting new novella in the Westcott series from New York Times best-selling author Mary Balogh.

Matilda Westcott has spent her life tending to the needs of her mother, the Dowager Countess of Riverdale, never questioning the life of solitude she has spun for herself. To Matilda, who considers herself the aging spinster daughter, marriage is laughable - love is a game for the young, after all. But her modest, quiet life of order unravels when a dashing gentleman from her past reappears, threatening to charm his way into her heart yet again.

Charles Sawyer, Viscount Dirkson, does not expect to see Matilda Westcott 36 years after their failed romance. Moreover, he does not expect decades-old feelings to emerge at the very sight of her. When encountering Matilda at a dinner hosted by the Earl of Riverdale, he finds himself as fascinated by her as he was the first day they met, and wonders if, after all these years, they have a chance at happiness together. Charles is determined to crack the hard exterior Matilda has built for over three decades or risk losing her once again....

I enjoyed the book thoroughly, but why so short? Almost felt rushed maybe because mature?

Too Short

10 chapters and same price as the rest of the series that are almost 3 times as long. Whole story felt rushed

If you haven't listened to the rest of the Westcott novels then this is not the one to start with. I've seen a couple of reviews that didn't enjoy it so much, perhaps that's why? Rosalyn Landor is superb as always and Mary Balogh (whose stories rarely tend towards melodrama anyway) delivers a sweet gentle story of past love rekindled. Plus it's so lovely that the protaganists aren't youngsters, I love the Westcott novels for that.

Matilda's story is worth waiting for and despite being short, ties up some other loose ends from the previous books. Having discovered Mary Balogh at the start of lockdown I am making my way through her back catalogue and find her writing easy to listen to (in no small part thanks to Rosalyn Landor) and captivating.

If you haven't listened to any other Westcott novels go back and start at the beginning, with such a rich tapestry of characters you won't be disappointed.

A lovely gentle story to tie up some loose ends.

This was a charming story and tells the audience that true love never dies and one is never too old to make a “go” of it ….

Very charming - and as always the whole family is involved and beautifully presented 😀

Charming throughout…

The hero and heroine were preventing from marrying at a young age. They meet and find they still love each other, so rectify the pass.
All the usual characters are present, but not a lot of "cud chewing".

Easy listening
