Great writing by Martha Wells and narration by Kevin R Free. Could have done without the sound effects.

Lovely filling in of the story

I'm not sure if it's because I'm autistic but I really struggled with the sound effects and voice filters - it distracted me from the story, made it uncomfortable to listen to and detracted from Kevin R Free's always excellent narration. I actually had to stop listening and will look for the Kindle version instead. So disappointed as I was really looking forward to it.

I feel like (for example) we don't need ART's voice to be echoey to know it's him and that he's a computer, the acting does that for us already and really well too in the rest of the series. The voice distortion also made it harder for me to pick up tone and humour.

Really hoping the sound production for the next book is more stripped back so that the story and his performance get to shine again, and it's more comfortable to listen to.

Kevin R Free doesn't need all the bells and whistles!

I love these books; I pounce on all of them, even on the short stories - pricey for the length, but worth every cent. And Kevin R Free's performance is always sublime, so this is no shade to him at all. But WHAT were Macmillian Audio/Tor thinking with adding awful, cheap sound effects to this production?? They're not in any of the other Kevin R Free recordings; we didn't need them then, and we don't need them now. They're grating, low quality, and wholly unimaginative, pulling you right out of the story. In what world would ART's voice have a static sound? And I know ART would rather self destruct than add a cute little "ping" sound effect when it shares data or an image with its crew. PLEASE go back to a voice-only production next time.

I preordered this thinking it was the next book in the series but it’s only one long chapter of something that happened between books two and three. Murderbot is only hinted at but doesn’t appear. It wasn’t worth a full credit, seems a bit of a PT to me, very disappointing.
