About this listen

Simla 1922, and the summer capital of the British Raj is fizzing with the energy of the Jazz Age. Simla is where detective Joe Sandilands is heading as the guest of Sir George Jardine, the Governor of Bengal.

But when Joe’s travelling companion, a Russian opera singer, is shot dead at his side in the governor’s car, he finds himself plunged into a murder investigation. Confronted by the mystery of an identical unsolved killing a year before, Joe realizes that Sir George’s hospitality comes at a high price.

I love these stories, especially the ones set in India. The detail and sense of place are quite amazing and are hopefully a fair account of the time and lifestyle. The plot twists and turns and once again is a great listen without being too taxing. Sometimes I just want to listen and enjoy - some audio books make me feel as though I should be taking notes for a test later!! This series always cheers me up.

Enjoyed the first book, and this did not disappoint. A good story, apt for the time period. The characters are well written and believable and the setting, in pre-war India, is refreshingly different. Joe Sandilands makes an interesting lead, who investigates the
Murder of a Russian opera singer near Simla in 1922. There is a real feel of the time period and the narration is excellent. Recommended.

Colonial society intrigues and murder, I enjoyed the narrative and narration, very appropriate for the era.

I really liked the characterisations and the backdrop of India. It was a great choice for an audible book and I was very keen to keep on listening. The whole story was gripping to the last. I can't wait to hear the others in the series.

A Very Good Detective Story

I couldn't finish this. The narration is delivered as an impersonation of a machine gun and this high speed, staccato attack of the text is most unsettling. I felt as the I ought to be at attention, while I listened and I'm afraid I gave up.

Painful To The Ears.
