About this listen

The empire is settled from its civil wars with a strong new ruler in Septimius Severus, and while the emperor campaigns in the east, a cohort of Praetorians has been left in control of Rome under Rufinus, now a tribune of the Guard.

But adventure calls once more, as Rufinus receives a worrying letter that sends him on a quest in the north, which will take him and his new faithful companion to the edge of empire, where he will uncover a secret that puts the whole world in danger.

Really enjoying this series, the books just don’t last long enough for me now. It’s another great story, plenty of action, although not as many plots twists this time, but a couple of interesting surprises along the way. Overall excellent.

Not long enough

Learning so much about the Roman empire while being royally entertained with a rip roaring saga.
First class narration; up there with the very best.
Well done everyone, not least the author whose knowledge, imagination and skill is prolific. Mick the Northumbrian Hick - a very happy listener. 😊

Brilliant! Eagerly awaiting the next instalment.

The whole series has been a magical romp through Roman history, I've been enthralled throughout, more, more, more please.

S J Turney master story teller

A new dog with a rather nasty party trick! I’m always amused how no one really cares when Turney’s characters wander off on side quests and no one notices. Rufinus has neglected his duty so many times he should be a legionary lucky to dig latrines by now. Still, that would be boring and these books are never that. Extra points for consistently nerdy authors notes.
