Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

Should we believe in God? In this new book, written for a new generation, the brilliant science writer and author of The God Delusion, explains why we shouldn’t.

Should we believe in God? Do we need God in order to explain the existence of the universe? Do we need God in order to be good? In twelve chapters that address some of the most profound questions human beings confront, Dawkins marshals science, philosophy and comparative religion to interrogate the hypocrisies of all the religious systems and explain to readers of all ages how life emerged without a Creator, how evolution works and how our world came into being.

For anyone hoping to grapple with the meaning of life and what to believe, Outgrowing God is a challenging, thrilling and revelatory listen.

A rehash of the God Delusion

If you have read The God Delusion then you will find that is more of the same. It should be read as an accompaniment to TGD. It’s well delivered but nothing new. I was hoping for Dawkins to discuss the demise of Christian values and how society is responding to atheism.

Wonderful Introduction to Dawkins

Having listened to 'God is not Great' by the incomparable Christopher Hitchens I was keen to hear more intellectual and evidence based scientific analysis of why we should no longer believe in Gods. For me, Richard Dawkins delivers this perfectly in 'Outgrowing God'. I have not read any of his earlier, revered work, so this 'beginner's guide' was just what I wanted. My enjoyment of the book was massively enhanced by the author reading it and I totally recommend it to anyone with an interest in finding out why intelligent grown ups have moved beyond the need for Gods.

absolutely amazing

narration was very good. I loved the information and it really strengthens my knowledge on how religion and gods are man made.

A bit of a ramble

I normally love Dawkins books but I have to admit, I really struggled with this one. It tried to cover science in a very very basic fashion while occasionally talking about religion but not really getting too deep on either. I lost track of how many times he said “I’ll come back to that”
I’m sure others will have a dig opinion but for me, this was a pass

As rational and thought provoking as ever!

Brilliantly written, researched and narrated by a excellent mind - an irrefutable argument, should be on the curriculum at schools...!

For beginners only.

If you have read any of Dawkins previously, you should avoid. Not a poor book, more a soft reformation of all his previous points. Good if you are seeking to gently pull someone towards rethinking or questioning religion. Read the blind watchmaker, far more interesting and compelling

One of the Great Explainers of Science

At 78 Dawkins has lost none of his brilliance. Pithy, eloquent and enormously enjoyable for a layperson such as myself this book can be seen as the 'little brother' to his groundbreaking 2006 work 'The God Delusion'. More in the style of 'The Magic of Reality' this book can be listened to (and understood!) by adults and children alike and may prove especially enlightening for the latter. I must also mention how important it is for an author to read their own work and thus imbue it with their own nuance of meaning - something Dawkins has always been prepared to do. I just wish he could be persuaded (for the sake of completists like me!) to narrate the books missing from the audible catalogue such as Unweaving the Rainbow and Climbing Mount Improbable. All we have left from the equally great Carl Sagan are a few chapters from Pale Blue Dot and Dawkins' great friend Douglas Adams gave us The Long Dark Teatime of the Soul but imagine how fantastic it would been if they had narrated their entire bibliography? Please take note, Richard!

What a mind and what a book!!

Richard Dawkins is a living legend of sparkling pros and eloquently worded science. This book touches on many of the subjects that he has previously discussed in his earlier books. An excellent example of how evolution and the natural world can give beautiful examples of simple rules giving way to breathe taking complexity. For me this is a perfect read, not in his usual style of dialectical prestidigitation. But worded well so everyone can enjoy the subjects and be amazed by what science has discovered.

Fascinating Educational and total master piece

Despite I did not completely agree with everything that author was saying, but I found it an eye opener to my challenged belief which I was struggled for many years. I found the book extraordinary.
