About this listen

A mysterious boatman on the Thames, a drowned heir, a dustman and his wife, and a host of other Dickens characters populate this novel of relationships between the classes, money, greed, and love. The 58 characters are presented with remarkable clarity by David Timson.

Critic reviews

"With a cast of characters that covers the whole spectrum of London life, Dickens weaves a tapestry of tales that are by turn funny, moving and tragic." (School Library Journal)
"The fact that Dickens is always thought of as a caricaturist, although he was constantly trying to be something else, is perhaps the surest mark of his genius." (George Orwell)

It's a pity that nobody at the time of writing suggested to Dickens that he edit this novel. For though a well conceived story, it is overwritten.
David Timson makes a great job of narration.

Great narration of Dickens classic

David Timson telling has brought this, one of my favourite Dickens novels, to life. I would have no hesitation in recommending this telling above all others. Thank you Mr Timson.

oh I loved this! brilliantly narrated, every character fabulously portrayed. Pity it had to end, I was enjoying it so much. it's hard to believe that this was written so long ago, socially still resonates with today's society. What a remarkable study of the human race in general, at it's worst and at its best. Fabulous, love you Mr Dickens!

Dickens at his best!
