Summary

Simon has doubts, and Gia has secrets - will they be able to let go of the past that hurt them both or will history repeat itself?

Gia is living the dream with an amazing career and wonderful friends. Her life is on the right track, until a tall, broody blast from the past breezes back into her life, sending her into a tailspin. She never forgot about Simon - her first love - or the way she cut him from her life all those years ago. Now, she doesn’t know what to do.

Simon never forgot the girl next door, or how she broke his heart when she left without even a goodbye. Thankfully, life as a professional gamer keeps his mind off his broken heart. That is until he suddenly finds himself back in her path. Now he’s pushing her boundaries and testing her limits. Simon and Gia have to find a way to coexist.

They started as friends, and maybe it’s time to go back to the beginning. Only, this time around, being ‘just friends’ doesn’t seem to be enough. Simon has doubts, and Gia has secrets. Will they be able to let go of the past that hurt them both or will history repeat itself?

Love knows no bounds

The saying if you love something, set it free, if it was meant to be it will come back. That is the case of this story of Simon and Gia. The story overall was good. Gia and her Twin had issues and not sure how much this really played into the story other than Simon was the only person in the group of friends that knew. I thought the story was good. It told of how Gia and Simon were best of friends at 16. Then it shows how they find each out again 10 years later. It was packed full of emotions. It ranged from wanting to smack Simon and to crying for Gia. The secondary characters were just as great. I want to know what happens with Linc and Ruby!
The narrator was good. At times, it was hard to tell the difference between the voices in the beginning. It took a bit to like her as she was new to me. Overall, this was a great book and narration. I highly recommend it. I am definitely going to check out the other books in this series.

Gia and Simon!

One More Round by Lauren Helms pulled me in immediately. I loved the characters of Gia and Simon in this book. I could understand why she didn't want her friends learning about her brother initially, and then it just seemed too late to bring him up. This story spans a long time, and is a second chance at first love. The concept of being paid to play games or watch television shows boggles my mind, maybe that is the difference between millennial and baby-boomer era people and jobs. Amanda Stribling performed this book flawlessly. She is wonderful at bringing the characters to life with her distinguishable voices for the various characters. I will definitely listen to more books by this author and narrator!

Second chances!

I love a story when the characters have history. Gia and Simon were best friends. The day before she had to move, Simon declares his love for her and Gia just can't take the grief of leaving. She cuts all ties with him. Now 8 years later, their paths cross again. Are the feelings still there? Can Simon forgive Gia for her past action? And will history repeat itself? This is my first book by Lauren Helms, and I loved it. It's the second book in the series, but reads as a standalone. The ensemble cast is cohesive and their friendships are unbreakable. Who knew gaming teams could be so much fun? Helms also gives us a look at mental illness and how families deal with it. As part of Gia's back story, this is handled with compassion, yet shows the pain and struggle each member has with it. Well written, fun characters and serious topics, Helms has leveled up with this gaming story, and I will go back to listen to Morgan and Dex!

Amanda Stribling is the voice behind the story and she gives a great performance. I find her portrayal of the new adult sub-genre perfect. She adds a lot of emotional pull into the characters, not only with Simon and Gia, but with Gia and Todd. I loved her narration.

2nd chance romance

Gia Newman and Simon Palmer were childhood sweethearts, Simon knew Gia’s home life was not the best, her brothers illness made stability precarious. So when she said they were moving and then she was gone without a goodbye he was devastated. So when she shows up in his life again several years later, he has doubts but decides to try again, but months later she is ready to move again her dream job is calling her. Sadly and reluctantly he lets her go, Gia not happy in her new life moves back again, the 3rd time however is a charm.

Does distance make the heart grow fonder?

I devoured this book in an afternoon. I really enjoyed the writing style and could easily picture myself in this group of friends. Their connections were so relatable and genuine. I loved that there were little things like a brand of headphones and a streaming site that I recognized instantly thanks to my own gamer boy. This is a really quick read that would be perfect for the beach.

This is the second book in the Gamer Boy series. The Story revolves around Gia and Simon. Growing up they were best friends and first loves. When a family tragedy tears them apart at 16, the need for a clean break prevents any closure for the pair.

Now nearly a decade later they find themselves in Chicago with the same group of friends; Awkwardly navigating their new relationship dynamic. While the spark of their childhood connection heats just below their icy exchanges.

Can they put aside old hurt or will a familiar set of obstacles keep them from finding their happily ever after?

Enjoyable... story and narration

So I haven’t read/listened to Lauren Helms before. However, this book, One More Round, is the second book in the Gamer Boy series. I really didn’t feel like I needed to read/listen to the first book to get this one. Of course I obviously missed out on the couple in Level Me up and probably even some background on Gia and Simon. Again though, I’m ok with it and don’t feel like I have missed out on anything. So… Gia… I loved Gia! She’s seriously my spirit animal! I love having a story about a blogger, especially one that is so strong and dominant. Simon made me laugh… a lot! I told my husband about Simon and how he’s a professional gamer. I’m pretty sure he’s crazy jealous now and wants to find out what job requirements he needs for that position! Really though, I don’t blame him… why guy wouldn’t dream about that job?

Sorry, I seem to be rambling. I found this book to be fun and upbeat… which explains why I feel so chatty. I love all the friends they surround themselves with… good people and good jobs. They all seem to have fun and “normal” lives. Gia and Simon used to have a close friendship but they now struggle with ripe tension between them. So I know this review makes this story seem super light and fun but there are larger issues hidden in with anxiety and some mental illness problems throughout. Life isn’t perfect. Miss Helms really reminds us of this.

The narrator, Amanda Stribling was pleasant to listen to. She has a great voice and it just really easy to listen to. I really prefer a male and female narrator to speak for a male/female POV but Stibling did pretty good. She obviously doesn’t sound just like a man but she does change her voice and infliction. I really enjoyed the pacing of the story. Good job, I’d listen again!

A must read

Gia and Simon have loved each other since they were teenagers. They were separated when her family moved away. Now her job may separate them and ruin their second chance at love. This book is filled with fantastic friendships, secrets, heartbreaking decisions, and love. I must admit that there were times when I wanted to yell, "What are you thinking?!!!" If I had been reading a paperback it may have been thrown across the room , but my tablet may have not survived. You will wish you had friends like Mia and Simon have.

The narrator brings you right into the story. I received this Audible book in exchange for an honest review. I highly recommend this book. It has so many feel good moments. Just don't throw your tablet.

Breathtaking and Moving!

I loved this breathtaking and moving second chance romance. Gia and Simon were best friends and more when Gia moved away suddenly without saying goodbye. Now years later they are back in the same city with mutual friends. Simon is hurt and doesn't forgive easily. Gia is so close and loves her friends but is afraid to reveal her secrets. When Simon decides he can't live without her any longer, he will do whatever it takes to make her his, this time for good. I really loved Gia and Simon, even when I didn't agree with their decisions, and the depth and strength of their love for each other. I also really enjoyed this whole group of friends. They were fun, loyal, and supportive, making this story feel very authentic and engaging. There are some very emotional twists to this story that are heartbreaking and had me totally captivated. There was a sensitive subject that I think Helms approached with honesty and empathy. I really enjoyed Narrator, Amanda Stribling. She easily made me feel all the heartbreak, struggle, hope and joy that both Gia and Simon felt. Her voices for all the different characters were well done, and dynamic.
This is my first listen to this author and narrator and I will definitely look for more from both of them.

Great story and narration!

This was my first book by Lauren Helms, but after having her recommended to me over and over, I jumped at the chance to listen. I am so glad I did! I really enjoyed this story and the narration.

The characters were all really relatable, and I not only enjoyed the main characters, but I fell for this whole group of friends. I loved the friendships they shared. These extra connections made them even more real and added depth to the story and the main characters.

I love second chance stories...when they are done well. I have to see massive character development to really believe things can make it the second time around. Ms. Helms did a really good job with this. Simon and Gia certainly have a rocky past. The impact of past decisions is heavy for both of them, but I never doubted their connection. From young love that never had a chance to a second try that was impacted by the weight of their past, I really wanted to see them fight for what they had. In the end, I was happy with how they were able to see what they had and take ownership for their own mistakes.

After reading, I definitely want to go back to book one and see Morgan and Dex's story, and I can't wait to go on to book three because Ruby and Link are clearly meant to be!

The narration for this book was so well done. This was my first time listening to Amanda Stribling, but I definitely won't hesitate to listen to her in the future! She brought all the feels with her narration, and did a great job of changing her voice for each of the characters. While I think solo narration can be tough at times, she nailed it.

A lot of firsts for this book.

This was the first book by this author that I have read it or listened to and a first for this narrator for me as well. This is a complete story that I really enjoyed I liked Gia and Si a lot. The “cast” of characters/ friends is amazing.
