About this listen

Businessman, author, professor, and podcaster Scott Galloway offers a path forward for men and parents of boys.

The lack of attention to the growing masculinity crisis has created a void which is now being dangerously filled by the Manosphere and misogyny. Male suicide rates are sky high; employment rates are low and mental health and relationship issues are impossible to ignore. This is not just a male issue: it is affecting society as a whole.

Scott Galloway has been sounding the alarm on this issue for years. In Notes on Being a Man, Galloway explores what it means to be a man today, and provides a roadmap for healthy masculinity and mental strength. He shares his own story from boyhood to manhood. In exploring issues like childhood, depression, anger, pressure, money and relationships, he shares the sometimes funny, often painful, lessons he learned along the way.

With unflinching honesty, Scott Galloway maps out an enriching, inspiring operator’s manual for being a man today.

BOYS AND MEN ARE IN CRISIS. SCOTT GALLOWAY HAS A PATH FORWARD.

NOTES FOR BEING A MAN:
  • Being a good dad means being good to women.
  • Action absorbs anxiety.
  • Find what you’re good at and follow your talent.
  • Get out of the house.
  • Take risk and be willing to feel like an imposter. This is a key to professional success, and masculinity.
  • Acknowledge your blessings, and create opportunities for others.
  • Be of surplus value.
  • Be kind.

I've looked at other reviews of this book, especially the negative ones (because I might be wrong) and can't help think they are missing the point. You can critique Scott's biographical notes and if you're already a fan of his you'll lap it up and if not you may take a more critical stance as some have. Alternatively, you can see it as an invitation to reflect on your own life as a father (probably - target audience) see the parallel flaws with Scott and use his research, observations and experiences to ask how you can be a better man and maybe help your son(s) and other men in your life to grow into better men. Taking the latter approach has inspired me and prompted a stream of ideas. If I can make good on a couple of those this book will have been priceless.

Great advice EXCEPT… your happiness is NOT in the agency of others. Surprised at Prof G on this point. Even though he enjoys fame, for many that is a high price to pay. He should know that for most genuinely happy people our sense of wellbeing comes from within. It is absolutely not in the agency of others!

Every man (and woman) should read this.

Scott is able to come up with a description of masculinity that is consistent with being a good person. Focusing on improving yourself and providing surplus value. Good advice. Take it.

I’m a mother of 2 growing boys and wanted to review this book before gifting it to them. I ordered 2 copies halfway through. A brutally honest book from Prof G. It’s raw and touching how much his love for his mother and sons come through. It hits the spot for a generation of young men who are disillusioned and lost. Superb advice with realistic goals, and best of all, comes from real lived experiences. Authentic, genuine and a gift to the young men of the world. I’m in Ireland. Thank you for sharing.
