About this listen

Businessman, author, professor, and podcaster Scott Galloway offers a path forward for men and parents of boys.

The lack of attention to the growing masculinity crisis has created a void which is now being dangerously filled by the Manosphere and misogyny. Male suicide rates are sky high; employment rates are low and mental health and relationship issues are impossible to ignore. This is not just a male issue: it is affecting society as a whole.

Scott Galloway has been sounding the alarm on this issue for years. In Notes on Being a Man, Galloway explores what it means to be a man today, and provides a roadmap for healthy masculinity and mental strength. He shares his own story from boyhood to manhood. In exploring issues like childhood, depression, anger, pressure, money and relationships, he shares the sometimes funny, often painful, lessons he learned along the way.

With unflinching honesty, Scott Galloway maps out an enriching, inspiring operator’s manual for being a man today.

BOYS AND MEN ARE IN CRISIS. SCOTT GALLOWAY HAS A PATH FORWARD.

NOTES FOR BEING A MAN:
  • Being a good dad means being good to women.
  • Action absorbs anxiety.
  • Find what you’re good at and follow your talent.
  • Get out of the house.
  • Take risk and be willing to feel like an imposter. This is a key to professional success, and masculinity.
  • Acknowledge your blessings, and create opportunities for others.
  • Be of surplus value.
  • Be kind.

Editorial Review

Part memoir, part battle cry
As a mom to four young boys, my eyes have been wide-open to the fact that men and boys are falling behind. The data is enough to make anyone spiral. When I saw Notes on Being a Man coming from entrepreneur, professor, and podcast host Scott Galloway, I knew I had to listen. Part memoir, part battle cry, Galloway uses his own personal history to underscore the crisis that men and boys are facing today. He highlights his successes, yes, but more importantly, he vulnerably emphasises where he has fallen short to help show a better path forward for the next generation. Narrated by Galloway, Notes on Being a Man offers clear lessons on how we can help men and boys live out more fulfilling, balanced, and healthier futures —Katie O., Audible Editor

I am far from being a young man, but I found this book inspirational and a chance to reflect upon my own life both as a boy and as a man. I really would recommend this, even if you don’t agree with everything he says. Sometimes we only know our own mind when we hear something we disagree with.

I've looked at other reviews of this book, especially the negative ones (because I might be wrong) and can't help think they are missing the point. You can critique Scott's biographical notes and if you're already a fan of his you'll lap it up and if not you may take a more critical stance as some have. Alternatively, you can see it as an invitation to reflect on your own life as a father (probably - target audience) see the parallel flaws with Scott and use his research, observations and experiences to ask how you can be a better man and maybe help your son(s) and other men in your life to grow into better men. Taking the latter approach has inspired me and prompted a stream of ideas. If I can make good on a couple of those this book will have been priceless.

Positive views on masculinity that don't treat women disrespectfully are lacking these days - this book addresses that head on. I also look forward to sharing some of these insights with my own boys.
