Summary
Imagine if you made one little mistake when you were young and were punished for it for the rest of your life. Well, that’s what happened to Lydia (yes, that Lydia, the youngest Bennet sister from Pride and Prejudice), and she’s here to set the record straight. Hold on to your teacups and get ready for sophisticated (and a little bit naughty) hot takes and witty banter that’ll make you laugh—and think.
We meet Lydia just as she is denounced by her family, exiled miles from home, and married to the rogue George Wickham, who seems to love all women...except his own wife. She must learn to summon great bravery to carve out a place for herself in the society that has brutally rejected her.
Lydia isn’t the traditional Austen heroine, and this isn’t a traditional, polite period drama. Lydia is a badass. A trailblazer. She’s fierce and fiercely funny. And she might inhabit the Regency period, but she’s fighting the same battle many of us are today—having to defend the decisions she’s made and the person she chooses to love, to shut out the 'trolls' and gossips, to hold her head high in a world that will judge her for any mistake she makes.
Starring Academy Award nominee Jessie Buckley (Fargo, The Lost Daughter) and Johnny Flynn (Lovesick, Stardust), this hilarious and timely listen is for fans of classics with a twist. Writer and creator playwright Sarah Page says that she wrote Mrs. Wickham to 'entertain people with a romantic, optimistic, and seductive comedy,' but that there’s also a 'message held at its heart to treat each other with kindness.'
If you binged Bridgerton, this one’s for you.
Starring: Jessie Buckley, Johnny Flynn, Emily Barber, Fehinti Balogun, Adrian Edmondson, Leila Farzad, Stephanie Hyam, Jodie McNee, Natalie Simpson, Ray Panthaki and Emily Johnstone
Directed by Eleanor Rhode. Sound Design by David Gregory. Co-produced by Wondermore Productions.

Wonderful short story
Enjoyed this immensely, a super little story which one could well imagine happening after “that book”. Acting was fab and Lydia a star

Loved every second
The banter, the narration, the story. It was simply wonderful. I enjoyed every second and would happily recommend to friends and family who enjoy Jane Austen or any of the many spin-off TV series and books like Lost in Austen or Death Comes to Pemberley.

Wonderful Alternative Pride & Predjuice POV Tale!
I loved watching the dramatisation of Pride & Predjuice with Colin Firth, Jenifer Ehle and their other incredible cast mates. My hubby and I would watch it whenever we were ill/sick and needed a 'comfort watch'. I am not able to focus on reading books these days so audiobooks and dramatisations are a blessing for me.
I loved that this book shows us Lydia in a new light, uncovering a story of courage, grit determination, isolation, sadness, ingenuity, creativity and love, both romantic and familial.
The performances were as amazing as the writing.
I highly recommend this audiobook, it's a little gem, shirt and sweet!

Wonderful twist on a Classic's development
I saved this book to my library on Audible Plus and it sat there, waiting, for a long time before I finally took the plunge and listened to it.
As a teenager I was an avid reader of all the classic writers, having studied English Lit. at college and I was totally averse to ANYTHING which was a continuation of the original but not written by the original author. (I know. An English Literature snob was I - also, that sounded like Yoda) Anyway... I took the plunge and I didn't regret it with this one. I LOVED the actors and, despite the music being a tiny bit 'off', I loved every other other part of it.
I personally found it to be a wonderfully executed story of redemption and of faith - in humanity - not God. It's a beautifully performed dramatisation which - I feel - despite it's taking a turn away from Jane Austen's earlier idea, works. Perhaps it's just because I felt an affinity with the lead character and her trials and tribulations, but the story spoke to me in ways that could be missed if one viewed it purely as a 'follow on' from an old classic and looked at it with a judgemental eye throughout.
Yeah, ok, they used music which didn't suit the story or the era particularly well, but it didn't detract from the characters or how they develop and that, I feel, is the key to why this is a wonderful rendition of a variation on a theme.
If you - like little old teenage me back in the day - find books written by authors as continuations of an old time classic novel abhorrent, look away now. But, for those of you who don't, I'd say go for it. Much like Lydia. You have nothing to lose... and everything to gain.

a nice surprise
Wasn't sure to begin with but it really was worth sticking with it. A nice bit of fan fiction. The actor reading Lydia made it.

DNF
Loved the premise, terrible execution. Couldn’t get over the soft rock music on the background of the tavern scenes. It was trying too much.

Was I supposed to feel sorry?
I love the Pride and Prejudice book by Jane Auston, it will always be one of my favorites, but was I supposed to feel sorry for Lydia after hearing this version? I don't! I felt that she got exactly what she wanted and needed to lay in the bed she made. Wickham proves to be just the rogue he was written as and only put himself further out by admitting he did not love or respect Lydia. The author even writes that Wickham himself told Lydia what he planned to do by seducing her. All this silly chit had to do was "listen"! Something she never does, and so she should pay the consequences for her actions.
Sarah Page tries to make Lydia and Wickham redeem themselves with each other and family, but for me, she just couldn't pull this off, not with Lydia or Wickham. They are just plain unredeemable!
Music and background noise is used to enhance this book and it just throws it all off. First, the music is way too modern to fit the time period of the writing, and it takes away from the overall experience. This one was so not worth my time.

Annoying music and OOC Characters
The music was really obnoxious and the story wasn't interesting enough to make me put up with it for more than 30 minutes. Lydia should be an interesting character to explore, but in this she's completely off the mark. It might as well have been original fiction not connected to Pride and Prejudice.

Best Listen I’ve Had All Year
I’ve smiled for two straight hours listening. The narration and sound design are completely immersive, the story is original in a way you could never expect. THE stand out among P&P follow up fiction. I’m so happy this exists

Unexpected
Well, Lesson learned: we all needed a refresher lesson in how our actions and predudices affect others. I didn't want to listen to this book about Silly Lydia, however, I gave it a chance. If for no other reason than I love this period setting and the characters from Jane Austen's original. I was pleasantly surprised and satisfied with how the author helped Lydia find her happily ever after. The narration was top notch too!

This needs to be a movie!
This was such an enjoyable listen. Each narrator was equally wonderful! My only complaint is that it was simply too short! I want more!

Beyond exceptional
What glorious voice acting! At first I wasn't sure how I felt about the music and sound effects, but eventually I found it to add so much to the telling of this short story. So very empowering, funny, and charming.

Wonderful performances, somewhat OOC characters
Overall, Mrs. Wickham is an enjoyable, albeit, sometimes out of character companion piece to Pride and Prejudice. I've always pitied Lydia, and the inner monologue and self reflections that Lydia has on her mistakes and tragic situation is really well written (kudos to Sarah Page), and expertly performed by the cast. There are, however, some characterisations that I found a bit strange. I won't elaborate so as to not spoil the audio drama, but I did personally find some aspects of the story a bit idealistic if not unrealistic. There are also some anachronistic elements/details to Mrs. Wickham that I found somewhat jarring at first. However, I don't think Mrs. Wickham was seeking to create an authentic portrayal of the time period anyways. Its goal was to conduct a narrative reflection on societies penchant for shaming, especially of young women, and how unjust or disproportionate it may be. In that regard, I think it succeeds. The cast performances in this audio drama were phenomenal. Jessie Buckley's Lydia moved me to tears at times with her fantastic and heartfelt delivery, and Johnny Flynn's Wickham was so dastardly that I almost forgot he played kind and thoughtful Mr. Knightley in Emma 2020, truly a testament to both of their acting ranges. The supporting cast are also fantastic; the performances truly make this audio drama shine. Ultimately, if you're a Jane Austen or historical purist, Mrs. Wickham might not be for you, but if you're alright with some creative liberties being taken, I think you'll really like Mrs. Wickham. I think it has some really important things to say, much of which (unfortunately) remains relevant to this day.

Lydia and George, are they the victims?
To all they have hurt and injured, there was not one word of an apology nor any expression of gratitude by these two jerks - Lydia and George Wickham. I was so annoyed and irritated while reading, trying to be patient and hoping it will get better - thinking since it looks to be a story of "redemption", that eventually these two jerks will finally face up to their malice and take responsibility. What a joke...just as always, all these two jerks kept on doing was finding blame in others and continuously trying to justify their treachery. Every one faces obstacles and indeed we are given the opportunity to alter ourselves and become better...however, the story for some reason kept trying to confuse us...as if the world gave these two (Lydia and George) a much worse situation than others. Was anything better for Lizzy and the rest of the Bennet sisters while under their father's protection? Why is being quiet and honorable like Mr. Darcy a character to make fun of? Did Mr.Darcy or Lizzy enforce these two jerks to behave in such a destructive manner? If this is to be a story of "Redemption", stop with the justifying, and rather start with the admitting and repenting of the malice committed to others. Truly, I did not know what the writer was trying to achieve here...

Why???????
Whose bright idea was it to not only add background music, but to use an ELECTRIC GUITAR AND ROCK BEAT???
Totally throws your mind outside of the time period and ruins it. I couldn’t past chapter 2, and that was only by giving it a chance.
Nope, not a chance!

Short and sweet
I liked hearing things from Lydia’s perspective. She was young when she made that bad decision. It was interesting to hear her story even if it’s not how Jane had intended it. The music and sound effects were a bit much but it seems all audiobooks are doing it now so I’m used to it. The narration was good by all parties. This is a nice little side story to add to the P&P collection.
